Question about Hayward SAND FILTER, PRO SERIES

1 Answer

I have hayward sand filter model 244T. I just installed it 3 weeks ago and it appears it is not filtering. It circulates and backwashes good but the pressure goes back to 18 psi and doesnt change. The water is not clearing up. Could there be debris in the multiport valve that could cause this?

18 is about what I would expect ... you shouldn't back wash until about 30.

If your water is cloudy ... take a look at the chemestry. Is this a gunnite or vinyl pool? Has the metal been removed from the water using a sequestering agent. What is the pH? Alkalinity? Oh yea ... how long do you run the filter? Should run at a very minimum 16 hours a day ... better to run it 24/7.

First, if you have not ... let the CH go to nothing ... put in some 'metal out' according to the bottle insructions. When the metal is gone ... next, get the alkinity to 100 ppm. Introduce Cl to 2 - 4 ppm. Get the pH to 7.4 - 7.6. Are you using stabilized Cl or liquid? If liquid, introduce 75 ppm Cynauric acid according to container instructions. What about calcium? Vinyl - don't worry about it ... gunnite - get the CA to 300 ppm. BTW - Don't dump all this stuff in at one time.

(presence of metal will turn the water green and possibly stain your pool)

If you fillow my lead, your pool will be sparlking in a couple days.

Darn spell check ... it is no better than me ...

Let the Chlorine go to nothing, if possible, before adding the sequestering agent ...

... and on second thought, you might want to have around 300 parts of calcium in you water

Hayward sand filter allowing dirty water to come through

1) Make sure that you have thoroughly backwashed the sand.
2) Make sure your chemical balances are correct
3) Remove filter canister top valve and insure that it was properly seated on the filters canisters center pipe.
4) Remove all sand from the filter canister
4) Clean all components thoroughly
5) Check for cracked laterals or plumbing
6) Repair or replace any bad or missing components
7) Reassemble

Tip: carefully use a rubber mallet to seat the canister valve by lightly tapping on and about the circumference of the valves seat.

Hope this helps,

I have a S-244T sand filter and I am noticing that my water level is going down about 3/4

When the pump is running is water discharging from the waste pipe outlet?
If so then the selector valve that switches the pump outlet to waste, backwash, filtering etc. is faulty.

When backwashing...sand discharges out backwash hose..

A little sand in backwash is not uncommon. Many packaged sand filter systems use pumps whose flow rates greatly exceed the flow capacity of the filter.(the more horsepower the better, right? - Wrong) If this occurs only during back flush the the pump is too strong or the sand level is above the beginning of the rounded top of tank. The sand level will eventually correct itself.

Backwash the filter. If the water coming out of the backwash line is not dirty you need a sand change. If the water is dirty you need to continue let the water filter and back washing once a week. Also make sure the six way is on filter and not recirculate

Just installed a hayward pump and followed directions on the pump having problems when we tried to backwash it shoots sand into the pool

Backwash should put no water back into the pool. It should be sending filter dirt to a waste line. Maybe your lines are incorrectly installed?
Secondly, under normal conditions, sand does not go to backwash waste either. Could there be too much sand in the filter?

Remove the screws holding the top of the valve into the valve body. Once removed lift the handle/cover assembly out. Depending on the model and age of the valve you will find a gasket of some sorts that sits between the portion you just removed and a surface or groove in the body. Reseat the gasket if you can for a quick bandaid then get a replacement part to fix it permanently.

We have a Hayward Pro Series sand filter S244T. It was installed 3 years ago. There is no indication of flow through the glass bulb on the back of the valve when the valve is in normal operating...

The sightglass is designed for backwash only, it allows you to see the degree of clarity in the effluent water. There should not be flow through the sightglass when the filter is in normal operation. Sometimes the pump will be alot louder when you backwash because there is alot less back pressure and it sometimes causes pump cavitation. The pump should quiet down when in normal filter mode. If not, there may be problems with the bearings and/or cavitation.

Reduced circulation/backwash (sand filter)

check your pool pump by putting the valve in recirculate mode.If flow is a problem it may be a clogged impeller.
