HI. The actual start switch will be the culprit. The switch circuit has failed. It is no longer able to hold a closed circuit. Use my procedure below to confirm the damage, and replace asap.

START SWITCH TEST:

Locate the start switch(Usually located in the control panel housing). it will have two or three wires connected to it. Label the wires and connections so that you can properly reconnect them later. The wires are connected with slip on connectors. Firmly pull the connectors off of the terminals (do not pull on the wire itself). You may need to use a pair of needle-nose pliers to remove the connectors. Inspect the connectors and the terminals for corrosion. If either is corroded they should be cleaned or replaced.

Use a multimeter to test for continuity. Set the meter to the ohms setting X1. For a two wire switch, touch one probe to each terminal. You should get a reading of infinity. With the probes still in place, press and hold the start switch, the reading should change to zero.

For a three wire switch, touch one probe to the terminal labeled NC (or CT1) and touch the other probe to the terminal labeled CO (or R1). You should get a reading of infinity. With the probes still in place, press and hold the start switch, the reading should change to zero.

If the switch fails either test, you should be replaced.

  • NOTE_Labeling on the switch terminals may differ.

This is either an issue with the motor centrifugal switch, timer, or the wiring connection between the two. But most likely the first. Check for 120 VAC between terminals 4 and 6 of the motor centrifugal switch with the timer set to any setting and the door closed. It is indeed a faulty motor centrifugal switch and needs replacing should 120 VAC is present between these terminals. Otherwise, check the connection of terminal 6 to the timer. The issue is within the timer should the connection turns out intact, good, and snug fit. Replace the timer if that is the case.

Please indicate the exact model number of the dryer for the correct replacement parts and for further troubleshooting if necessary.. The advice was posted prior to your posting of the model number. The problem would have been determined if the model number is indicated in your first post. Anyway, the issue is with the motor relay. Hold the Push-to-Start button for a couple of minutes to check if the dryer heats up or not. If it does, unplug the dryer then insert a putty knife blade between the console and the cabinet as shown to release the clips holding the console to the cabinet then rotate the console up.

Use the heater relay near the timer in place of the motor relay near the Push-to-Start switch. Make sure to take note of the wiring connections of the relays before disconnecting them. Rotate the console back into position then plug the dryer in and start it. Replace the motor relay (part number 3405281) if the dryer continues to run with the heater relay used.

GE dryer starts but..... stops

What you describe is either a failed evenheat board or a failed motor relay.
Please post the complete model number from the machine and I can help you narrow it down. There should be a wiring diagram inside the console with voltage checks also.
Thanks/Mike

Kenmore Elite 73942 Gas Dryer only runs with start button held

Unplug the dryer. Open the control console.Mark and remove the wires from the start switch.
Using a volt meter set for continuity, touch meter leads to R1 and R2 while pushing the switch. No reading is a bad switch.
Touch meter leads to R2 and CT1. No reading is a bad switch.
If the switch checks out good the start windings in the motor are bad.
