This can be anything from a bad battery contact, to something that went defective on the circuit board. Just double check that you are inserting the batteries properly if it takes AA types.

You would be best off to call Canon's tech suport and arrange for warrenty service.

Can't turn on

I have similar issue. The batteries were left in the camera for more than a month. After battery recharge it worked for few snaps and stopped working while taking a snap. After that I tried charging battery but it seems to not work anymore. I suspect battery is dead. I have ordered new batteries, lets see if that makes it work.

Try returning it back to Walmart, the camera maybe covered by warranty, otherwise it won't be worth fixing as it may cost more than $20.

Hi, Have you tried a different battery as it sounds like the battery may be a lemon? Also depending where you bought it you may be able to return or exchange it still.

Things to check first for a camera that won't turn on are battery contact points, and micro switches that are located on the battery and memory card doors. Troubleshooting tips on other things that need to be checked may be seen here. These tips won't work for every case, but they're worth a try.

My kodak c813 digital camera will not turn on

I bought this model several months ago and it was working great up until Christmas time.  For some reason it just stopped working.  I couldn't get it to turn on OR sometimes it would turn on after several attempts.  I kept changing the batteries and sometimes that would work, but it was more or less random successes.  I found this link on FixYa : http://wwwuk.kodak.com/global/en/service/batteries/batteryDigCamChart.jhtml?camera=C813
I was using generic batteries (Philips) which I bought in bulk from a discount tech store and these batteries were working in the camera since I bought it.  The batteries were new; just generic.  By coincidence I ended up buying KODAK branded alkaline batteries from the same store.  I replaced the older generic ones with the KODAK batteries and the camera came back to life!  I'll leave it off for a day and see if it turns on tomorrow.

Occasionally while shooting in auto/portrait my shutter will stay open for 1 second or longer, for no reason

Have you tried to reset the camera and reboot the firmware? I had that problem with a friend's camera and it simply worked.
Other thing is: are you using the original battery or a third party battery? sometimes bad quality batteries are creating such a problems like shutting down the camera, shutter lags...

I hope it helps, if not let me know

Camera ate batteries fast, now won't even turn on

Try using Lithium batteries. A lot of other batteries don't have enough voltage. Those batteries seem to fix a lot those electrical problems in some cameras. If that doesn't work then more than likely you have a short in side the camera. which could be caused from anything from a grain of sand to moisture from humidity. If that is the case them it more than likely will not be cost effective to fix. It would probably cost around 150 to get fixed.

hope the lithium batteries work,
Caleb

Camera won't turn on.

Mine had the same problem.  I consulted http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/ and it said to use rechargeable batteries only.  The entry claimed that alkaline batteries, even if they're brand new, don't have sufficient power for more than a few pictures and may not even be powerful enough to turn the camera on.  I was dubious, but I tried putting in a pair of fully charged rechargeables and, by Gum, the camera was suddenly working again.  So before junking the camera, try investing 20 bucks in a battery charger and a pair of AA rechargeables and see if that fixes it.
