In control panel go to "system" then "device manager" and see if there is a yellow exclamation mark in the sounds, video & game controller section. (click the + to expand the section).
You probably need to uninstall the sound card driver and reboot so windows can re detect it and reload the drivers. You may have to download the drivers from the support section of your computer manufacturers site. look for a link to support. have the model and serial number ready.
