Bleach is the best thing to getting rid of mold.

Pour 1 cup of bleach into a bucket of water swab or scrub the areas until wet, then leave for 10 minutes. Then rinse walls with regular water. You can also use "Lysol"disinfectant All purpose cleaner. Spray whole areas till wet and leave on for 10 minutes. Mold is scary. You need a air vent system in your bathroom.
Heres how to take care of your bathroom from now on.
1. buy bathroom caulk and seal any separations where the tub and walls are supposed to meet. 2. Seal with the bathroom caulk any separations where the tile and walls should meet. 3. If you don't have a air vent you must wipe down your tile and ceiling after each shower and bath.Wipe them dry. then keep the bathroom door open to allow steam to leave the bathroom. Most people don't know how to use their bathroom. They think that because they have tile they can wash and just go. No so. The tile should be wiped down of excess water. It doesn't have to be bone dry but the excess water should be wiped away. Tile allows the water to run off of it and will not buckle as will regular walls, that's the only difference. So keep a towel specifically for wiping the walls in your bathroom. You should clean the body dirt from the tub and walls after you shower or bath with Ajax or a foaming bubble tub and shower product or Lyso disinfectant All purpose cleaner, then after you rinse the above mentioned off, you should wipe the walls dry and leave the bathroom door open for a few hours. Its a lot of work but this is how it should be done to be safe and maintain the bathroom. I figure in all the time I'll need to wash myself and the tub and shower and leave the shower dry and put the bathroom back in order before I shower and bathe.

Take care.

Used filler for filling nail heads rubbed back next day perfect two weeks later painted wattyl undercoat water base and filler went soft

The wood filler, a water based product, pulled the water out of the latex paint and softened. To preclude this in the future, you can cover these repairs with shellac or another sealant to provide a barrier between the filler and the paint. Spray shellac is available in hardware stores, and is used on water stained ceilings before repainting.

Should i use the same drywall in the bathroom as in the rest of the house?

I recommend using MR (Moisture Resistant) drywall for the bathroom, and possibly for the basement if there are moisture issues. It is not much more expensive, and it can save you a big headache later

How can i prevent my bathroom ceiling paint from peeling off

One of the main reasons for the breakdown of paints in bathrooms, is of course moisture. Do you have a fan/ventilation system, (not just a recycling air filter,) that can be turned on when you bathe or shower? This would help. Also, a better type of finish would be an eggshell or satin finish type paint. The moisture cannot gather to the same extent on this type of finish.

Black soot is on the walls & ceiling around the baseboard heaters in the rental house that I live in. What is causing this & how do I clean this off?

If these are electric base board heaters, that is probably not soot, but instead mold. Put a little bleach in a spray bottle and try spraying it right on to the black soot looking stuff and see if it will disappear. If it does, it is mold. Bleach will kill the mold.

If these are gas heaters you need to call a service man NOW. Black soot is a sign of gas burning raw and can be very dangerous. Turn them off if this is the case.

Our vaulted living room ceiling has black smudges coming through the paint...we have used Kilz paint and repainted several times...also had vents put in the roof

Did you happen to spray the mold with Bleach before covering up ? If mold is still in growth mode even Kilz cannot keep it from penetrating.. Usually half water and half bleach would be ok. Just vent the house well.
