well mute button is too obvious, can't be that.Some remotes have an SAP button for secondary audio programming, meaning its looking for an audio feed in another language, that would mute sound if it didn't find it. So look for buttons labeled sap or audio. if you have a button labeled "display" it may tell you on the screen what setting the tv is currently on as well.
