Question about Sony STR-DE615 Receiver

1 Answer

I have a str-de615 Sony AM/FM Receiver and the "protector" flashes on after turning it on. The fuse was replaced and after turning it on it had a small smell of burning plastic. I have used a continuity checker and tested all the IC's after spending some time taking it apart. I cannot find one that is blown. The new fuse had a smaller amp rating and did not blow. It turns on fine. I like the receiver and do not wish to part with it. Could it be a particular IC ( Audio) The receiver was plugged into a power strip so I moved it to a direct electrical receptical. Still the same problem with a flashing "protector". Can I reprogram the receiver? Does anyone have the default code? Thank you, Kevin

Protect mode is usually a fault with the output stages.

SOURCE: str-685 has poor fm reception. have tried 3 different antennas.

If you are sure with the antennae then the fault is with the RF section within, It can be related to a faulty RF section, tuner or IF. You need to take a signal test to confirm.

Protect typically means that the fuse blew because something in your receiver went bad. It's now protecting your speakers from that badness. You need to get the receiver fixed or replaced.

My sony str- is getting a sony protector check code 22. Is that a fuse problem or do i have to get sony to fix it?

Unfortunately this is not a fuse problem, as the fuse would burn before the protector check code appears. Probably there is a short circuit and you should take to an authorized sony repair shop. Good Luck.

Stuck protector mode

find out why the fuse blew in the first place.the protector is just PROTECTING the main circuits of the receiver.the receiver turns on just to confirm the power circuit is OK.
have it checked by an electronic engineer.

Do you need a remote to fully power it on?

The problem was caused by a blown fuse. The secondary power supply was still functioning which powered the small LEDs and some of the switches on the front. The fuse went because a pair of the darlington driver transistors went (center channel I think) and some components on the rear speaker driver board.
