I found a very old Scwinn 26" boy's with a 3 speed coaster brake on it. I figure someone swapped it decades ago. Do you know how far back that 3 speed w/ coaster bakes goes?

Three speed Schwinn's go back to the late 50's and 60's. Just type Schwinn Photos in the command line on the internet search page area and a full page of pictures will come up. Here you may see the exact bike you purchased with the descriptions.

My bike does not seem to shift gears should I be cruising as I shift or should I be pedaling

Your bike must not be the Cruiser pictured - that's a one-speed bike. So here's a general description--- For gear changes on multi-speed bikes, where the chain has to move between different size sprockets, the chain must be moving in order to shift. So, yes, you have to be pedaling, but it works best if you pedal very lightly - so that the chain is moving, but is under very light pressure. On the other hand, if you have a 3-speed bike where the gear changes take place inside the hub of the rear wheel, the wheel should be moving, but the chain should not - so you should be coasting to change gears.

How do I remove the rear sprocket from a 7-speed

You need a bicycle-specific chain wrench to hold the cassette stationary (for when you reinstall it) and a cssette wrenc to loosen and tighten the lockring on the cassette. You can pick up both of these tools at any bicycle shop. Info on how to perform the work once you have the tools can be found at

    Hope this helps,

It is a 3 speed coaster brake and the speed changer threaded mechanism keeps coming out of the hub because the internal mechanism is stripped. Had it repaired once and the same thing has happened again

There is very good information at this site: You can also find the info on the three speed changer here. They are fairly easy to work on if you have tools but you will have to shop around for parts. Hope this helps.
