A/c will not continue to cool.. Starts fine, runs fine.. but shuts down cooling ( comp shuts off but fan still runs) after anywhere from 5 min to multiple hours. No circuit breakers or fuses blow. CAN...

One amateur test is to place your hand on the compressor and see if it
is too hot to hold your hand on it. You may have a restricted condenser coil
If it is too hot then the condenser coil is restricted inside the unit
if not be sure and clean condenser coils with good coil cleaner.
You can put a fan on the compressor and see if it runs for another test to confirm it

My air conditioner keeps icing up and the flow is then reduced and cooling is diminished. I was recently in a very hot area and the AC was working very hard. I'm in a more reosonable temperature now but...

Check the filters and make sure the coils are clean first. Then make sure both fans are running, the evaporator fan and condenser fan. If all of that is ok then you need to get the refrigerant charge checked.

Freezer does not freeze things, ice cream is liquid

Check:

(You may need to remove the back cover for next two steps)

* Is the fan in the back of the appliance working? If not, use a fan a blow some air in the condenser.

* Is the condenser clean? remove dust, lint and other particles.

* Is the appliance installed in the garage, a hot location, or closed to the range? You may need to place the fridge in a better location. Some kits are available if the appliance needs to be placed in a hot location.

* Is the thermostat low? Try to "increase" the temperature to "colder"

* Is the fridge door closing properly? Check the seal around the door if it closes perfectly.

If nothing of above works, it may be caused by:

* Broken thermostat.

* Failure on the sealed system

Good luck.

We got home from work yesterday and the refrigerator was HOT inside.

How to check stuff
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp ..
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

Blowing hot air. Compressor not kicking on. Where

Possibly three things, either a thermostat problem, starter relay/capictor, or a bad overload protector not closing after an overload. The starter relay should be behind a black box located on the side of the compressor.

Furnace has a mind of its own

If your thermostat no longer controls your furnace possibly could be the control board in the furnace or a shorted fan relay.
