Craftsman Riding Mower transaxle Problem Model # 502.254970. I was mowing and pieces of metal covering the transaxle flew off and is leaving transaxle exposed. The mower won't drive and seems to be stuck in gear and grinds when you try to change the speeds. It is a 6 speed shift-on-the-go model. I know the part # is 91863 for transaxle but has been discontinued. I have an older Murray with a blown motor and wondered if the parts were interchangeable.

No it will not fit because both the parts are bit different in fitting internally. But yes if you have the Murray then you can try removing the trans axle from Murray and bit of modification to the metal part out of trans-axle can help. But in actual the parts are bit different. It will not fir directly/. Thanks.

There is a brake assy. located on your transaxle right rear side. There is a nut with a cotter pin. First check to make sure there is no debris clogging the assy. Clean it first. you can use a garden hose. If that does not work remove cotter pin and turn nut clockwise until slotted nut lines up with hole. replace cotter pin. Start mower and see if it will engage. these transaxles are notorious for not having the pads snug enough to catch. Good luck. Hope you don't need a new transaxle.

I have a Husqvarna 42"

You should have the Oil & filter changed per this manual:

To make sure you have the correct manual go to this link and enter your model number:

I tried this model number and it did not work: 960.50002 I think you are close though.

Make sure that it is warm if you can before changing oil. One Procedure calls for removing the transaxle to change oil... It takes 80 oz of 20-50W oil. It is important to FLUSH the transaxle if you are experiencing problems. There is a product caled engine Flush that you can purchase to flush the transaxle.

Mose transaxles that experience motion problems are caused by contaminated oil. Flush.. flush... flush.., then wait for it to drain out... and then finally re-service with 20-50W oil.

Change the Filter too.. if your unit has one. All of them have the internal metal mesh screen which is why it is so important to flush out the debris.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Starting Craftsman model 917.270430 riding mower.

There's a safety shut-off switch below the seat, so when you're seated the switch is engaged. If you were to fall off the mower, the engine and Blades stop (safety feature).
Check the switch to see if it's operational.
Beyond that, mower may need a tune up or servicing, if it is not starting.

I have a craftsman 12.5hp riding mower. went to mow and a very loud noise came from the mower. sounded like i ran over a huge piece of metal. i had shut everything down and it would not start up. there was...

I would check to see if you can rotate the fly wheel by hand. Also check to see if the blade(s) move easily (with the mower off and key out get under tractor and try to rotate the blade if it moves freely then great if not then you have other issues). Report back so that we can go from there.
