Do a power drain. This is done by pulling out the power cable and then holding the on/off button for a minute, then putting the power cable back in (this didn't work).
Then do a master reset. Unplug the printer, then pressing the help and ok buttons simultaneously plug it back in.

Without turning off the product, disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
NOTE: The USB cable connects to the port on the back of the product. The port is labeled with the USB icon (have an error message oxc18a0401 what can i do? - c01424575.gif ).

  • Remove the cartridges from the product.
  • Wait for the 'Insert Cartridges ' message to display on the control panel.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord. If the product does not automatically turn on, press the Power button (c01602202.gif ).
  • Reinsert the cartridges, and then close any open doors on the product.
  • If you receive a prompt to print a calibration page, do so.
  • Reconnect the USB cable to the rear of the product, and then try printing again.
  • if that doesnt help

Reset the system by holding down the OK, Cancel, Black, and Color buttons down at the same time and turn the unit off. Keep holding the buttons down until the printer shuts off and the turn it back on. You will have to turn the printer off twice and then it will recalibrate.

    if that doesnt work.....

1- Turn off power and unplug from power source.
2- Open right side of printer (looking at the front).
3- Disconnect,by pulling gently, both white flat ribbon cables off the main circuit board.
4- Plug in power source and turn printer on. Wait till you get a error message and push "Ok".
    5- Unplug power source.
6- Reconnect the flat ribbon cables by aligning and carefully pushing into the conectors on the main circuit board.
7- Plug in power source and turn printer on (Printer preparing occurred).

    if that too doesnt work

Display should say “Support” and display the FW rev (something like R0616R)
    Then perform the below steps:

    8. Press and release the “CANCEL” button as many times as necessary, so that, either the “Welcome to Photosmart Express” screen appears, or, the “Ink System Failure” screen appears. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO PRINT AT THIS STAGE.
    9. Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.
    10. Wait 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then plug the power cable into the wall outlet first and then into the back of the printer
    11. Turn the unit on. The printer may display message “USE POWER BUTTON TO SHUTDOWN THE PRINTER” followed by “PRESS OK TO CONTINUE”. Press OK.
    12. If the printer has already initialized, then go to the next step. If not, the printer will start the “ONE TIME INK INITIALIZATION PROCESS”. Allow this process to complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process is complete, the printer will print out a Diagnostic Page.
    13. To verify printer functionality print a SELF TEST PAGE. If SELF TEST prints, then printer is ready for use or Software Installation.

at this time we have tried everything possible.... if it still doesnt work... there could be ahardware failure which requires Service from HP...

    Good luck

    Hello,

to resolve the error message, you need to reset the printer. Reset the system by holding down the OK, Cancel, Black, and Color buttons down at the same time and turn the printer off. Keep holding the buttons down until the printer shuts off and the turn it back on.

You will have to turn the printer off twice and then it will recalibrate. Make sure you have new cartridges in the printer so that it can reset.

If that doesn't reset the printer, you can follow the reset procedure from the below hp link:

As per the error code and message you are getting and printer's age, this looks like a real error message.

It signifies a hadware failure in the Ink System which is responsible for sending signals to the ink cartridge to print ink on paper.

Some times its only a print head or carriage and most times its even the circuit board and other sensors involved that go bad.

If in warranty, you should get it repaired for free by HP. In 90% cases they just replace the printer because repair is expensive.

If not in warranty the repair will not be cost effective. But if you want you can call HP and take a quote.

Even if you want to repair it yourself, you need to buy the complete Ink System from them which will be more expensive than buying new printer.

A ink system failure has occured oxc18a0401 i have cleaned the ink tips but no joy please help ta

    Hello,

The 'ink system failure' error is caused by air in the ink feed tubes inside the printer. This problem is caused by either letting your ink run totally out in one or more cartridges or using poorly refilled cartridges. You will need to run a purge routine to flush the ink tubes of the air and clear the error message. We have an article posted on our web site at: http://www.ccl-la.com/blog/index.php/category/printer-repair/hp-printer-repair/ that will walk you thru running the purge routine. It takes about 10 minutes to do but then your printer should be good as new.

I hope this helps, if so please rate our solution.
