A new hard drive will not contain an operating system. It will have to be formatted and then an operating system installed. Follow the instructions that came with it or try booting with the operating system CD.

Install an operating system

You need to change boot options in BIOS. Press required F key during boot. Look on the screen since Function keys vary with systems. In boot options make optical drive (CD\DVD) 1st. Save and reboot. You should get "Press any key to boot from CD". Note: Some systems have an ad-hoc boot option during startup. Thus eliminating the need for BIOS change.

You will have to install a new operating system. If there is valuable information on the hard drive of your desktop, I suggest a linux distro, as it will not format the hard drive and your information will stay safe. These operating systems are free as well. However most people find these operating systems hard to use, and much prefer the Windows based operating systems. To install a Windows operating system you will need a cd with all of the components on it, you may have gotten one when purchasing your computer, or you can buy one for around $200. If you are not secure enough in installing your own operating system, take your desktop to a local computer repair store and ask to have a new operating system installed. On average this will cost anywhere between $300-500.

My hp desk tip says " Disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter" Please help what to do.

Your hard drive may be faulty, this is why the Windows operating system not found.
Go into the BIOS and see if the hard drive is detected, if not reseat the hard drive and boot up again.
If the Windows operating system not found then most likely the hard drive is faulty and to get the Notebook working again, replace the hard drive, install Windows on the new hard drive plus the HP desktop device drivers and your programs.

You can download the device drivers from the Compaq/HP WEBsupport/download page. Make sure
you select your model laptop and the Windowsdrivers you require and install them. Click on this link to download thedrivers: -

1. you will need to know 1st that the hard drive you are installing is compatible with the desktop.
2. Is the hard drive compatible with the new Operating system (VISTA).
3. Check to see if you have the hard drive properly inserted that is properly cabled and connected. This will render error in installation.
4. Make sure you are installing the Operating system correctly.
5. Some boot sectors become corrupt during a change in Operating system if the hard drive is not properly formatted.
6. Try formatting the hard drive again and re-installing.

I power up the computer and get ''operating system not found'' on the screen.

The operating system not found error message is one commonly seen by techs and non-technical people alike. If you run into one, it may not be a problem at all. Here's an example:

If you're installing a new operating system to a hard drive or partition, or have just installed a new mother board, chances are you aren't alone. Most of the occurrences of the operating system not found error occur during these processes. In many cases, this is simply BIOS related, and can be changed very quickly (and remedied) during the Boot process. There are a wide variety of occurrences of this error, so if you have recently been "tinkering" or have installed a new operating system, take heart, there are many computer forums on the subject which may be able to point you to an answer.

Another reason why you may get an operating system not found message, is due to a damaged or incorrectly formatted partition. If your computer can't read the partition, then all data stored within that partition cannot be found. This includes your operating system. To solve the problem, you may need to look into partition recovery.

There are instances, however, when the operating system not found error occurs because of file system error, or worse, hard disk drive failure. If this is the case, you may require professional hard disk drive recovery, especially if you were not changing the system details recently, and were just working as normal.
When To Suspect Hard Disk Drive Failure Certainly, there is an explanation for everything, and the operating system not found error can be explained very easily. First, check your floppy disk drive. Is there a disk in it? In cases where this occurs, simply removing the floppy disk will likely solve your problem. Your computer may have been looking for an operating system on the floppy, and as a result, you were handed an error message. Removing the floppy disk should fix your issue.

If there is no floppy disk in your drive, it may be time to check the boot sequence. You can do this in your BIOS. First of all, does your hard drive get detected as the primary hard drive? If it does not, your hard drive may have in fact failed. If it does, move to the Boot Sequence section of the BIOS. If your hard drive does not show up within the first three boot devices, you probably have a problem. Adjust your BIOS accordingly.

Can't Find Hard Disk Drive Either

If you've done these preliminary checks, and are still receiving the operating system not found error, you could be facing hard disk drive failure. If this is the case, remember : DO NOT PANIC. 99 times out of 100, your hard drive's data can be recovered by a professional firm. So rest easy. Then try this test if you have another computer system available.

First, disconnect your hard disk drive from your system, and connect it to a system you know works as the slave drive.

Second, boot up the system and go into Windows explorer. If you can see the drive, you may not have a problem at all, or have one which can be fixed with simple data recovery software tools (Do a search on Google for data recovery software tools for a selection).

If, on the other hand, you cannot see your drive, you may want to consult a professional hard disk drive recovery shop like Hard Disk Recovery Services. Contact us here for a hard disk drive recovery quote, and we will usually be able to diagnose your problem over the phon

You can't transfer the operating system. You have to reinstall it on the new hard drive. Most of the time the disks that come with a computer are just restore disks. Without the restore partition that comes on the hard drive that came with the computer, those disks are usually useless. Or if you want, you can keep both hard drives, and just setup the jumper settings on the hard drives so that the old hard drive is the primary, and the new one is the secondary. Then you will still have the operating system and you will use the new hard drive for storage.

Hard drive not found

Wayneard is correct. When you install a brand new hard drive as the ONLY hard drive in the computer, there is no operating system loaded. The computer will try to boot from the hard drive and stop. Switch your boot order to have the CD boot first, and be sure you have the operating system installation CD in your CD drive.

Also, double check your hard drive connections. Be sure it is in the "master" position on the hard drive cable. If there is a connection problem, the system will complain after CD start that there is no hard drive available to install the operating system on!

Good luck.

Looks like your hard drive has a problem and cannot be recognised. The laptop is trying to boot from the network ( PXE rom). Check the bios to see if there is a hard drive present. If not it is most likely the electronics of the hard drive - replace it. When you turn on the laptop listen carefully around the hard drive. Do you hear a clicking or repeated set of sounds. If so there is a physical problem with drive - replace it. If it sounds like it is spinning up ok you could try a reinstall of OS. Most likely this will fail, and, even if it does it most likely will reoccur.
Good luck

The price for a notebook hard drive really depends on the size that you will purchase. You can search for prices using the google product link. Just type in notebook hard drive. Its pretty easy to install yourselft so dont worry its just a matter of opening a few screws. You will need an IDE notebook hard drive by the way. Although you cannot put in a new or extra fan on the laptop itselft you can buy one of those laptop coolers. The ones that you can put under the laptop.
