How to unzip one folder on an external hard drive (a back-up)

Using Windows Vista; IE

I have a SimpleTech SimpleDrive External Hard Drive. The contents are zipped. I have located a folder (with 10 files in it....WordDocs) that I would like to retrieve.

I can find a way to UnZip the entire zipped file (with over 2000 items in it) by clicking on UnZip All. I tried using that to unzip my WordDoc folder but can't.

How do I retrieve (unzip) one folder, with 10 files in it?

SOURCE: SimpleDrive I cannot retrieve files; Model No. 96300-40001-001

I feel the problem can be something else as well.
The message "Photo Gallery can't open this picture because it might have been deleted or is in a location that is not available" can be because the Photo Gallery program that you use to view pictures in your computer.
First, try this, right click on the picture and click on "Open With". This will give you a list of all programs.
Here, you can select "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" and place a check in the check box below that says "Always use this Program.." and click OK. See if this works.
I would also like to know if you are able to open other files on this drive except picture files.
Also, the document that you are trying to open, what's the file type for this document.

You can try one more thing that will help us to isolate the issue.
Please note the next step we are going to do is just a diagnostic step and we will revert back to the original settings after this step.

  • Go to Run and type MSCONFIG and click OK
  • Now on the new window that comes up click on a tab at the top that says Services
  • At the botton check the box that says "Hide All MS Services" and click "Disable All" on right
  • Now go to last tab at the top that says "Start up" and click "Disable All" at the bottom.
  • Now click OK at the bottom.
  • It will ask if you want to restart or exit without restart.
  • Click on Restart.
  • Now your system will restart.
  • Once you come back to Desktop you get a message that says "Sys config was used to make changes to your system.
  • Click OK here and it will again open the Computer Management window.
  • Again go to the Services tab, check "Hide All MS Services" and this time click "Enable All"
  • Next go to the "Start up" tab and click "Enable all" here as well.
  • After this, click OK and this time click "Exit without restart" (now settings will be restored whenever you restart the system)
Now go ahead and try to open your pictures and documents to check if its working.

If not, then try the fixes provided by other friends above.

Even if it works after MSCONFIG, that will show that there is some other program/spyware creating this problem and in that case try uninstalling any recent programs you installed and Run the complete virus and spyware scan.
Please let know if you need any further help.

SOURCE: SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 320GB Power up problem

It could be that it's internal power supply burnt out,
in which case the drive itself could still be fine.

Try opening up the external case, and removing the drive.
Once you do, plug it in to your computer directly using its SATA cables, and see if that works.

Hope I helped,
Tom

SOURCE: General questions regarding simpletech simpledrive.

You probably have to initialize and/or format the drive.

Right click my computer and click Manage (assuming windows xp)

Go to disk management

See if you see the drive listed somewhere there. Should show approximately 950gb disk drive

If so right click that drive listed and choose either format, or create partition.

If you create the parttiion, make sure to click quick format, otherwise it will take a long time.

Hope this helps

HP windows 8 does not recognize simpleteck hard drive

I purchased a SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 500GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive - Onyx for my Vista machine and all was well. Then I purchased a Windows 7 machine. It would not recognize the devise. I contacted SimpleTech only to be told my model cannot be used on machines newer that the Vista. Recently I purchased a Windows 8.1, did a little research, plugged the SimpleTech into the 8.1 and reformatted it using the Windows feature. The SimpleTech is alive and well on my 8.1.

If you have a SimpleTech SimpleDrive connected to your computer and you're experiencing problems with the external hard drive, there may be several reasons why it's malfunctioning. Troubleshooting your computer can help rule out common problems and the possibility that the hard drive may be defective. If you recently purchased the device and suspect there is something wrong with it, return the defective drive to SimpleTech or the reseller for a replacement. Incompatible USB Port Problems SimpleTech SimpleDrive plug and play options makes it easy for you to connect the device to your computer. But you may encounter problems if your computer's USB (Universal Serial Bus) ports are not compatible with the external hard drive. Make sure your ports are powerful enough to operate the drive. USB 2.0 ports are recommended, but if you're using an older computer with 1.0 ports, the hard drive will function much slower or you may receive an error message that the device is not compatible with your system. b> Missing External Drive Letter If you're unable to find the SimpleTech external hard drive's letter on your desktop after you have installed the drivers for the device, it's possible that the external drive may be assigned to another drive. Sometimes, the hard drive is assigned to a network drive and you may need to manually change the drive's letter in Disk Management. b> SimpleTech SimpleDrive Incorrectly Formatted b> SimpleTech SimpleDrive is normally pre-formatted for Windows NTFS (New Technology File System), but Mac users may need to copy the backup software and reformat the external hard drive for FAT32 or Mac OS to be able to use the external drive. If the external hard drive is not formatted correctly for your system, it may not function or work properly. b> External Hard Drive Inaccessible If you receive an error message that says "Drive Inaccessible," the SimpleTech SimpleDrive may not be able to read the service area of the platter. If the external hard drive emits a loud or abnormal sound, this could mean the device is failing.
Test the drive on another computer to see if it is working properly. Otherwise, the external hard drive's surface area may be damaged or corrupted.
Replacing a Defective Hard Drive You can return a defective hard drive that is under warranty to SimpleTech. The manufacturer will exchange the device if the seal is not broken. But if you break or tear the seal on the case, any warranty claims will not be accepted and the device will be returned back to you. SimpleTech will only accept the device if you contracted a commercial data recovery company to retrieve critical data from the external hard drive and the seal needed to be broken. Before returning the defective drive, you will need to secure a RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) approval number from SimpleTech and furnish any invoices or documentation regarding the data recovery company's services
or if its a usb external drive you might need a usb 3 card installed on your computer your computer might not have enough usb output power USB 3 card will provide more power when needed to the device to gain maximum throughput and conserve power when the device is connected but is idling http://blog.premiumusb.com/2010/09/usb-2-0-vs-usb-3-0/ these can be purchased on Ebay cheap and easy to install http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PCI-e-PCI-Express-USB3-0-Card-new-NEC-720200AF1-chipset-/330608109325?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cf9c7670d for roughly $9 or $10free postage Hope this helps.

My windows XP OS won't recognize my SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 300GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

I found that often, external hard drives just don't have any active partitions and thus don't show up in Windows. Go into the control panel, administrative tools, computer management and then the disk manager and see if it has a partition. If it's just unallocated space, right click and make one.

My simpletech 500gb cant be open

I was going to tell you that you need to download a driver from the simpletech web site that allows it to run under Vista. But, I went to the simpletech web site for you and took a look. All of the products I could find (ie: simpleshare, thumb drive, desktop drive, network drive...) haveonly drivers for Windows 98 or WIndows Millineum! If you have one of these, they probably dont support it under Vista. It is usually the way companies get us out of older technologies and push us into their newer products. SOunds like a conspiract theory, but its the truth. Anyway, if you have a newer model I havce not run across on the site, may i havce the model number to check? Or you may do it, if you feel comfortable with doing such research. Here is the link: http://www.simpletech.com/support/support_downloads.php
