The air filter is a piece of cake... it is inside the middle cover which comes right off....The fuel filter is a different animal and is located IN the fuel tank at the end of the smaller diameter fuel line which comes out of the tank and goes directly to the body of the carburetor...your problem could be something else entirely though...like worn carb parts...partially clogged muffler and/or arrestor screen or port. These engine produce a by-product of carbon because of the amount of oil they burn along with the gas. It's good that it at least starts but I am leaning towards a problem with fuel delivery here. Drain the fuel tank... Look inside it and check condition of fuel filter...sometimes they break/rot off of the fuel line in the tank and the fuel lines should ALL be replaced at that point.

If you like, just cut off the old fuel lines right at the fuel tank and then push what's left in the holes thru the holes into the tank. There should be (1) fuel filter & (1) small nylon fuel line connector in the tank. Just shake all that stuff out the fill hole and get about one foot each of the 2 different size fuel lines from small engine (lawnmower) shop. Cut ends at an angle, lube up a little and press them thru the holes until they are long enough to grab them with say needle nosed pliars. Put on fuel filter...leave slack in this line so it can move around in the tank...put nipple connector on the larger line and pull it back thru from bottom of tank till it stops...then cut your NEW lines to the length of the old ones (or the length that you prefer0 and you are done!

Thing that it sticks out of. The tips of the string is not visible throught the holes but you can see that there is sting in there. How do I get the string out? Thanks

What is the problem when my 27cc craftsman weed wacker starts but doesnt stay running

check age of gas. Cannot be more than 30 days old.
Make sure to use fresh gas w/synthetic 2-cycle oil @ 40:1 ratio (1 gal.) Gas to 3.2 oz. Oil). Do not use old or stale oil/gas mixture. Always use the proper oil/gas mix. If you do not, your engine will suffer rapid, permanent damage.May need to clean or replace carburetor.

Craftsman weed wacker will start and run

Are you sure you have the right fuel mixture? Many of these require 2 Cycle oil to be added to the gas. If fuel is right, you may have a vacuum leak at the carb (or crack in base where it mounts to the engine). My weedwacker needed to be run on half choke for about 10 min before it got hot enough to run with choke off.

CRAFTSMAN WEEDWACKER 316-791860, WILL NOT START. HAS SPARK, FUEL LINES FILL UP, WAS RUNNING FINE, DIED, STARTED NEXT AM, RAN 5 MINS THEN DIED AND WOULDN'T RESTART

Two things which may be the problem: 1) carb need to be rebuilt or replaced, and 2) you need a new spark plug. The carb with shipping is around $50.00 from sears ( http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Craftsman-Parts/Grass-trimmer-weed-wacker-Parts/Model-3167918602008/0247/1503820/P0805032/00001?blt=06&prst=&shdMod= ) A sparkplug can be had at any small engine repair shop and most auto parts stores for less than $5.00 Start with the cheap solution... Also make certain you have fresh gas and that the oil mix is correct.
