Most likely an open speaker, though water damage to volume/squelch controls is also a possibility. This can be checked by removing the knobs and inspecting the shafts for corrosion.

Everything seems to be working but have no sound or squelch.

what kind of radio? It could be a number of things from a transistor to a transformer . Could also be a bad switch .Check your contacts on the squelch switch to make sure they are secure and if its a cobra or any other radio where the squelch and volume are on the same switch make sure those contacts are secure Could also be your final or driver in which I would change both.

Can I disconnect the squelch on a uniden scanner model# bc142xL? & will scanner still work?

Why would you try to disconnect the squelch? If you turn it one way, it does not work at all. If you don't get any sound it won't be caused by the squelch circuit. You really have to look somewhere else if you don't get any sound.

Quits working, but a very loud note or sound will break through and will start working for a while longer.. Like a squelch on a cb radio.

Sounds like a dry joint, if you're brave it may be worth going inside and flexing things to see if you can find it and then fix it if you're any good soldering.

My Ranger2950 has no sound??

Have a look here for info about the Ranger 2950. This is an Amateur 10 & 12 meter transceiver that enjoy some popularity due to its ability to be modified to work on the 27Mhz Citizens Band.

Make sure the Mode is set to something other than PA. A few of the first things that come to mind is the Volume, Squelch & RF Gain settings. The Volume is straight forward - choose a setting in the middle to begin. Next, set the squelch. Most radios have the squelch open when set fully counter-clockwise. As you move the squelch to this position, sound should be heard from the speaker if a signal is present. As long as there is an antenna connected, the radio should "hear" noise. If you do not hear anything, leave the Squelch fully CCW and try varying the RF Gain fully in one direction. If you still hear nothing, set the Squelch to the fully clock-wise position. Adjust the RF Gain to the opposite direction. At this point, you should have heard something - even if just static hash. If not, the volume control may be dirty. Disconnect power and rotate the volume control back and forth several times to dislodge any dirt on the volume wiper inside the radio, and try again.

Make sure that the Ext Spk jack does not have a plug inserted as it will defeat the internal speaker. Likewise, if using an external speaker, make sure it works.

Good luck!

Won't pick anything up (uniden BC72XLT)

Not sure this would be a solution but...
Make sure you don't have the Ch. Locked out so it just skips them..

You may also try and let the scanner sit on one frequency that you know has chatter and see if you receive.

This unit also picks up local weather try that feature and you can tell if you reception is working or not.

Constant Rx

Hi, It would initially seem that your auto squelch is malfunctioning. With the squelch apparently way down, the RX indicator would automatically appear as if you are receiving something (even if it were just noise). Assuming no other fault except the auto squelch, a possible workaround is to use any of the 38 CTCSS codes both in receive and transmit. With the CTSS activated (TX/RX), even with squelch all the way down or auto off/defective, you will not hear anything except a radio transmission with the correct CTSS code. Again, this will only work of course with just the auto squelch muting problem. Any other problem/fault and this method may not work. Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turn out or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.
