Question about Poulan Pro PP3816AV 38 Cc 16" Anti - Vib Chainsaw

I have a Poulan Pro 16 inch chain saw that will not lubricate the chain. I have cleaned the ports and made sure the reservoir is clean.

It sounds like a bad oil pump or worm gear; this should help
Oil System Plugged:
1. Remove the clutch cover, bar, and chain, clean the bar groove, any holes and passages on the rear of the bar (both sides, consider rotating the bar), if equipped with a sprocket nose ensure it rotates easily at least one complete revolution.
• Clean the saw oiler hole and channel. Insert a blunted, hooked piece of wire through the oil filler hole and pull the hose in the oil tank out.
• Pay attention to the screen or filter on the free end (clean or replace, difficult to determine serviceability).
• Start the saw and see if it oils when revved up (oozes down side of saw).
• If yes reassemble your saw. If no, continue with 2.
2. Work your way through the linkage (use IPL to identify components and locations) cleaning and replacing any defective parts as you go.
• Carefully check the hoses for cracks especially at bends and connections.
• If equipped with an oil pump it is usually behind the clutch (99.9% of clutches have a left handed thread; tighten it to remove it).
• Please make extensive notes & some digital pictures will help during reassembly.
3. If it does not oil on completion of 1 it is most likely a bad oiler or worm gear (see IPL for the location).

The IPL (exploded parts list) for your saw is the only detail for the oil system and it is sketchy at best. Oiler components and part numbers are listed but may be on different illustrations. They are also beneficial with disassembly/reassembly:

    It has an inboard clutch if a 3816;
    start like this;

    1. Check the IPL for your saw to see if any special tools are needed. Poulan (Craftsman, Jonsered, Husky) clutch removal tool part number 530031112 if needed, is under $5 from many sources (look at the visible area between the weights if 2 small round sockets are visible you need the tool).
    2. There are metal piston stops available, when square (almost never) with the piston top these work well, if not square they have been known to punch through the piston. I suggest a length of nylon rope (nothing left behind) be used instead of the piston stop (retain 6" ± so you can remove it). Make certain the piston is near the top of the cylinder before feeding the cord or it can fall through the exhaust port and damage the piston as it rises.
    3. Everyone I have ever removed had a left handed thread (tighten it to loosen it).

My Poulan Pro chain saw (model # PP4620 AVHD) doesot move B&C oil from the oil reservoir to the chain. How can I repair this?


If the ports where the oil comes out aren't clogged, you will have to order a oil pump and then take apart the saw from right underneath the bar. The oil pump is run by a worm gear that strips easily.

is the area where you tighten up the chain clean there are a few holes in the bar that allow the oil to drip on to the chain if its been used for a while the holes could be clogged take off the bar and chain and clean with a small flat head screwdriver the groove that the chain rides in there should be a hole that goes all the way through make sure you wipe away any wood chipsthen run it and see if it throws out any oil

Poulan Pro Chain Saw Bar Chain Oiler Stopped Flowing


The filter can usually be caught with a hooked wire and drawn up far enough to deal with the filter. Oil filters are not prone to plugging unless the oil used is contaminated. If you run the engine without the bar and chain attached, oil should ooze out of the engine side port. If nothing, suspect problems with the oil pump. Some saws use a plastic gear in the pump and can strip the teeth of the gear. You should find it located behind the clutch assembly. Once you have oil flowing from the engine, clean the bar drive-end oil ports that go from the large holes out to the chain groove on each side. Finally, run the bar tip near some cardboard--it should throw off a thin line of oil. I have no idea what the plastic tube might be (a manual pumper perhaps?). Hope this helps!

Chain keeps losening up


Is the chain being properly oiled as it runs? Check by running the tip of the bar at speed near a piece of cardboard for several moments--it should throw off a thin line of oil onto the cardboard. If nothing, remove the bar and chain, start the engine and observe the oil port in the side of the engine case. At speed, it should ooze out oil. If so, clean the bar drive-end holes that feed oil to the chain. Pay particular attention to the two small holes that run from the large holes out to the chain groove. If nothing comes out of the engine port, then an inspection of the pump, lines, and tank filter are in order. Make sure the chain is properly sharpened as a dull chain makes a lot of heat which allows the chain to stretch. You should not have to apply high force to the saw to get it to cut. Set chain tension so that the chain does not droop from the bar bottom, but turns easily by hand. Hope this helps!

Oil System Plugged:
  1. The bar/chain oiler has stopped working. What to check? Yes there is oil in the saw. If I have to replace parts, how do I remove the clutch?


Just an idea, but I would remove the bar and back flush the oiling port hole with some air pressure. Then if you are able to get the line and pump clear, I would flush out the old oil.

Could you maybe have got some sawdust into the oil reservoir?

I have a poulan-pro 20" chain saw ... It doesn't seem to have good chain lubrication ... How do I check if the chain oil pump is working (or if there is a clog) ... The manual is poor ... Thanks ...


What I would do is remove the bar and chain. In the side of the bar are a couple holes that feed oil from the saw into the bar grooves. Make sure these are clean of any debris. Then look at the side of the saw where there is usually a wear plate and make sure the groove there is also free of debris. Lastly I would start the saw WITHOUT the bar and chain and look for oil coming from the groove area described above. If nothing coming out then you have a problem with saw motor and would have to go deeper into it.
