Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Have an HE3 Kenmore Front Loader. The tub will not agitate or spin. The water will pump in and you can see the timer decrease and at the proper time the water will pump out the water and for the rinse cycle take in more water but at no time does the tub rotate. At the end of the washing cycle there is some minimal water in the but but I believe it is from the clothes that did not have the water spinned out. I have the front cover off and can see the motor and can see something inside rotating/spinning.

Hello, welcome to Fixya.

I`ll start with stating you`re on the right track. The only thing you need to do to proceed is to access the machine from the back panel because it sounds like the belt has either spun off or broken.

Once you have the back panel off you`ll be able to observe if the belt is indeed broke or not. If so replace it by putting the belt on the motor pulley first and then spin it onto the larger drum pulley similar to installing a bicycle chain, starting at a point and spin the pulley until it is you don`t pinch your fingers, ouch !

If you need a belt most brick and mortar parts stores will have them or any number of on-line vendors such as "" "" etc. You will just need to provide your complete model number, located on a white tag at the door opening to the cabinet.

If the belt has indeed just spun off insure the tub pulley is not loose in any way, hence causing the belt to "wabble" off as it spins.

Let me know what you find and if you require further assistance.

If are satisfied with the solution I provided, please take a moment and rate it accordingly...if not though please let me know.

Thanks for visiting "fixya" today.

Thanks, yes it is the belt, BUT, it is not a broken belt. The Pulley is not even seated tightly, it is very
wobbly and the belt just comes right off again.

How does the pulley stay seated tightly? Is it with a gear mesh method? There is big lock nut
which seems to be the way to keep the pulley tight but it isn't loose.

that is exactly one of the things I suspected, the pulley is worn. If you remove that bolt is the center and pull off the pulley you will see it is "rounded" its edges that should be square to the tub shaft.

As long as the shaft itself isn't damaged too bad the pulley can be replaced. As with the belt you'll require the model number to research a replacement.

Let me know what you find when removing the pulley or if you have any further questions.

    Good luck.

Pulled off the pulley. Can't really tell if either the pulley or the shaft has been damaged. The
pulley does not seat tightly onto the shaft. There seems to be two raised nodules on the pulley exactly oppisite each other and these do not allow the pulley to rotate all the the way
around the shaf either wayt without catching and turning the shaft. Would you be able to
get pictures. I took pictures with my phone and could text them to your phone.

    Hello again,

While I don`t presently have any means of receiving "text" since I don`t have my iphone ( I`m at my day job doing sears service ) I`m pretty sure you need a new pulley by what you`ve just described.

That pulley should fit tight or "snug" on the shaft with zero tolerance and the bolt simply holds it from backing of, the pulley itself fits tight. It should not spin on the shaft to any degree let alone most the way around or as you put it,

"There seems to be two raised nodules on the pulley exactly opposite each other and these do not allow the pulley to rotate all the the way around the shaft either way without catching and turning the shaft."

If you provide an actual model number I could tell you the exact part number, but you can also find that via most parts locations or web pages.

If you find a way to paste the images on your post I would be happy to look at them, but like I said I`m pretty certain you need a new pulley.

Let me know how it goes.

Stopped working mid cycle. The timer still counts down but does not fill, agitate, spin, drain. And before it stopped, the water that was draining out smelled really bad.

The filter on your pump is probably clogged with lint and stuff. You have to remove the bottom front panel, 3 torx screws underneath. The panel will drop and come off. Drain off the excess water from the hose you see. The white filter cover is right in front. Get yourself a bunch of towels or a good big plastic bag to collect water. Unscrew the filter cover and twist the filter out. Clean out all the stuff and put it back in carefully.

Next: You can use Affresh to clean your front loader. Deposits of soap and other such things can be stuck around the inside tub of your washer. Try this product, it works great on all front loaders. Use quite hot water with the Affresh pellet with no clothes and run the machine through a cycle. Also helps with any stagnant water smells. Have you cleaned out your pump lately. Put the pellet inside the machine, not in the soap dispenser.
Pl give me a good rating for the free help, thanks.

Washer wont stop filling

There is probably a plastic tube running from the tub to a pressure switch which controls the water level cutoff on control panel. One can locate this by taking the backcover off and looking at the water level switch and following the tube to the connection on the tub. Tube must fit on level switch tightly for it to work properly.

Washer won't drain or spin

top loader ??? or front loader??? if top loader you have broken your lid switch, will fill, agitate, but when it comes to drain/spin for safety reasons if the unit doent recognize the lid closed it will not advance...if yo have a front loader then i would suspect that something has gotten into the pump assy and preventing drainiing of water therefore will not spin

gabehart....sounds like belt is slipping. Replace it. The water pump is on a separate smaller motor so is not affected by the agitator/spin motor.
