If the cartidge s not the solution repost. I fixed many systems and printers in my life, but unless I talk to you over a phone or see the printer, it is just an educated guess. Thank YouHi packermary,

Yes that is possible and I have seen it happen first hand. Boil some water and put some in a small cup or bowl, dip the print head (where the ink comes out) into the hot water, be careful it will likely bubble, this dissolves any dried ink, then clean and dry off the cartridge and try it again.
If ink cartridges aren't brand new there is a possibility they have dried out. If they are new though, the print heads are dried and need replacing in which getting a new printer is cheaper.
If ink dried out it's done. Recycle it and get new cartridge. If cartridge is more than 50 dollars don't buy it. Go to Walmart and you can by a brand new cannon printer with ink cartridge for $49.00
A brand-new, never-inserted-into-the-printer, ink-cartridge will have a small piece of tape over part of the mechanism, to prevent the ink from drying-out while it sits on the store's shelf. If you inserted a brand-new cartridge, without removing that tape, just remove the cartridge, remove the tape, and re-insert the cartridge.
Could be many things... First Is it a new cartridge? Did you refill it? If you did was it dry when you did? always fill before completely empty. First try the clean setting on your printer. Also try the prime ink if it has one. You can hold the cartridge under hot water for a few min to losen hard ink. Just the bottom of cartridge. blot dry with a paper towel. ink should show on towel. dont touch the brass part of cartridge..
You can try one thing: 1. Use a damp tissue and soak the printing part of the ink cartridge this may clean the dust and the dry ink at the bottom of the ink cartridge or else at times we do get faulty cartridge on the market you will need to replace with new one Ok hope this help Regards uttam
This is a possibility however I can't be positive unless I were there to check it myself... where the printer hasn't been used in years it is highly possible that the ink in the cartridges has dried up. This is not uncommon.
It's also possible that the outlet for the ink on the cartridge itself is blocked with dried ink. You could place the ink cartridge itself in a saucer of nail polish remover (covering the electronic looking portion of the ink cartridge. Leave it there for 30 minutes. Blot dry it with a cloth and replace it into your printer. Try to print once again.
If this doesn't work, you most likely need new ink cartridges. Considering the cost of the ink cartridges for your printer, you are better off buying a new printer in which new ink cartridges are included. A new printer should only cost a little more than the cost of new ink cartridges. Considering you only require am all in one home use printer. Check online sites and check stores as there are usually sales ongoing.
did you take the tape off the new cartridge and is the print head burned out for the black? if you installed the diagnostic's on it then run it and see what it says, otherwise expect the print head to be cooked, however it is possible to get a bad ink cartridge try tapping it on your finger and see if ink comes out if it does not then the ink cartridge is dried out or no good, about %15 of print cartridges are bad on just about any brand printer some more than others.
Cartriges have a shelf life. It's printing in blue either because it has dried up or is out. Different cartriges have different timelines but if you haven't been using the printer often, it could have dried up or is simply out of ink. I would suggest first to try cleaning the head of the cartrige where the ink comes out with alcohol and a Q-tip and then if that doesn't work, buying a new black cartrige.
I just wanted to say thank you for your advice. I'll take it back tomorrow and see what happens
