You can fix this with the Official XBox 360 Repair Guide. Do not use a guide that has you cutting up rubber pieces to put into your xbox. They will melt causing an unrepairable mess.

You have to first pull off the front faceplate. it will pop right off. then take the harddrive off. pop the two grey ends off. Now take the back and with a small flat screwdriver push it into the small slots till you here a click. do that all the way across the back. then do it to the front. there easier clips in the front. pull the bottom cover off. next take all out all of the screws. i believe T10 and T8 torx bits. then carefully flip it back over and take the top off. make sure you pry the cd drive button off first. Fom here you should be able to diagnose whats wrong or whatever you needed to do.

My xbox 360 has two red lights flashing. What should i do? I've already let it cool for four hours. I've never had this problem before. i played with it for over five hours last night. It was in a...

This is an overheating problem Microsoft Knowledge Base article 907533 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907533

You may be able to send it back to Microsoft under warranty - which is worth it as they offer extended warranty against this and the 3 light problem.

If out of warranty and if you're feeling up to it, you could try a repair yourself. The majority of the overheating problems are either caused by inadequate ventillation or build up of dust within the xbox, in particular around the cpu and gpu heatsinks, and the rear fan. The trick is to dismantle the xbox without breaking lugs/tabs. Here's a repair guide for 3 red lights, but it shows you how to safely open the xbox 360. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo2dl2vlwis
There are two vids for this
Once you have the xbox open, using a small fine paintbrush, cotton buds/q-tips and can of compressed air, clean all the dust and fluff from the cpu and gpu heatsinks and the rear fan. Be particularly careful if brushing dust from the mainboard as the smd components are quite fragile. Once all clean, re-assemble the xbox in the reverse order of opening it. Hope this helps

2 red flashing lights

The Xbox console is overheated.
  1. Let your Xbox 360 console cool. You may have to wait several hours for your console to cool enough. Don't turn on your Xbox 360 console when the console is hot.
  2. Verify that your Xbox 360 console has enough ventilation and that the fans are operating.
  3. If the two lights continue to flash red after you try steps 1 and 2, contact Xbox Customer Support.
To try to prevent this problem, follow these precautions:
  • Don't block any ventilation openings on your Xbox 360 console.
  • Don't put your Xbox 360 console on a bed, on a sofa, on a carpet floor, or on any other soft surface that may block ventilation openings.
  • Don't put your Xbox 360 console in a confined space, such as a bookcase, a rack, or a stereo cabinet, unless the space is well ventilated.
  • Don't put your Xbox 360 console near any heat source, such as a radiator, a heat register, a stove, or an amplifier.
Taken from Microsoft support.

Best of Luck.

It's overheating. Consider buying an external cooler at a local Target or Best Buy.

Re: Blinking green light/won't detect disk drive

If you still have a warrenty sticker call up Microsoft and tell them that your Xbox 360 has overheated, and tell them your serial code. They will tell you if your warrenty is expired, if it's not they will ask you where you live then pick up your Xbox 360 and fix it for free. If your warrenty has expired try this. Power off the Xbox 360 and when it is off press the eject button, it might open they tray. Or try opening your Xbox 360 and remove the disk drives cables from the disk drive and the motherboard and put it back together, you should never try the towel trick really, although it works it can also give your Xbox 360 3 red lights then you have to buy X-clamps and theormo paste, just do the X-clamps and theormo paste when you get one red light. I have had two Xbox 360's, when I did the towel trick it burnt the GPU, the other one a little componante came loose, sorry for my spelling. Hope this helps =D

I have 2 red rings on my xbox 360 but i dont understand what they mean...

The 2 flashing red lights may indicate that there is a hardware problem with your Xbox 360 console. The main thing that causes the 2 red lights to start flashing is because of overheating and as the motherboard within the console takes more heat it actually warps and bends until the solders become loose.

Once this happens you will receive the 2 red lights. Even before you get the 2 red lights you may have noticed your games freezing and this is caused in the same way, by overheating. As the chips take more heat they shut off to prevent lasting damage, although they can only do this a number of times until you get the Xbox 360 2 Red Lights.

To fix the problem you need to stop the level of heat the motherboard takes and you can do this in a number of ways, but it will involve opening up your Xbox and working on it. In addition, you could always send your Xbox back to Microsoft as they are offering free repair for this error, you will just need to wait 3-4 weeks that's all.

There is one more option available in the form of DIY Video Guide, that will explain you step by step approach to fix red ring of death within one hour without any technical knowledge.

weel you see i had the same problem, and it is because of the heatsinc unit in your x box over heating not your xbox. you can send it back to microsoft if you have a warrenty and they will fic it, or you can do what i did but my warrenty was out of date, i opend up my xobox and reversed the cooling fans, you can find ou thow to open your xbox on you tube or google it, but when you do get it open take the big white plastic piece out open the tabs for the cooling fans and reverse it so the air blows on the inside. i did this and my xbox is working like it was new. only do this if your xbox is out of warrenty though. i am not responisble for what you do to your xbox. this is just a suggestion.

Center light flashing red and green

If you have not "opened" your Xbox (taken the case off the main unit) and you are having problems, think about calling 1-800-4MY-XBOX that is the customer support number for Microsoft. If you have had it less than 90 days it should be covered under warranty. If you open the unit they will no longer fix your system for a reasonable charge and it will be cheaper to buy a new one. Check out some of the light errors here http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/xbox_motherboard.htm It depends on your exact sequence of flashing lights as to the exact problem. Hope this helps.
