    NEW QUESTION!!!

how do you update the bios?
(i have never had to do it before)
do you burn the update to a cd/floppy and boot from it?

    @Leecom72

I Just Checked All Of Them, The BIOS Versions Range From A00 to A08, i have been on dell's website and can't find the bios update. also some of them don't have the option to boot from a usb device.

I Have Resorted To Using A SATA DVD+/-RW on the hdd SATA port And 160Gb IDE Hdd on the CD IDE connector! lol

P.S: i just won a hdd on ebay, '160GB Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600JS' it says it is SATA 2 but will work SATA 1 with a jumper???

if not i will just update the BIOS as you said.

Hi,

It makes no difference providing the computer motherboards support SATA interface.

SATA 1 and 2 drivers are in the BIOS. If all the computers have SATA 1 you can upgrade the BIOS to latest version via Dell's support website.

Regards.

    Hi,

It would depend on the file type that Dell provides. They can come in different formats. Some BIOS updates require you to format a floppy disk or a USB drive that requires you put the files on them or a Windows based update like an .exe file.

Dell's website will give you all the information on what to do and how to do it either on their website or a text file which will explain it.

When you download the BIOS update the information on how to update it will be provided with that. Just make sure that you are downloading the correct BIOS update for the particular computer you want to update.

If you have a different model Dell then make sure you download the BIOS update for that model. If all the computers you have are the same model then all you need to do is download one file and use that to update all the computers you have.

    Just another quick note:

SATA hard drives don't have jumper settings on them, only IDE drives have them. You have to set the boot order in the BIOS.

    Yes it should work.

I told that it would work. A SATA 2 drive in a SATA 1 board just makes the SATA 2, SATA 1. Think of it as a downgrade for the drive.

    Regards.

SATA drives do indeed have jumpers, but they aren't for configuring slave/master or Cable select options. They are used to change the data transfer rate from 1.5 to 3.0 gb per second.
This however doesn't apply to your particular problem unless your hard drive wont read due to the higher rate of transfer relevant to your hard drive vs the data input capability of your SATA bus.

They came in different flavors, so the easiest way would be to look inside and discover if it has SATA connectors or ATA only.
SATA and SATA2 are compatible, you can connect a SATA2 disk to a SATA-only motherboard, usually there's a special jumper on the HDD to set the mode.
Good luck!

I bought a Dell Optiplex 745 with no hard drive. I bought a second hand WD800JD SATA hard drive with no CD's and installed it. The computer does not recognize it so I cannot load an OS. Can you help?

make sure that the leads are in there correct slots

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your motherboard to your hard drive make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty

hope this helps

I want to set this up as a slave drive in my Dell Inspiron. What are the jumper settings to do this

this is a SATA HDD, so to make it a Slave drive, it will need to be on the SATA-1 or later controller (The Boot Drive should be Sata-0)

Western Digital Caviar SE WD800JD SATA Hard Drive Boot: Couldn't find NTLDR could this be bad drive installed xp a couple times now works ok but when i shut it off Couldn't find NTLDR comes up

Yes it looks like a Hard drive problem.
This error means that NTLDR is missing somehow from your computer, hard disk problem usually or virus.
You can go to that page and follow the instructions exactly as he says and will not have to install windows over and over again
