Wd connected with a usb to laptop, not responding, pls help ,steady white light on

    If it is the first time of use try formating the portable drive but bear in mind that formatting will erase everything on the drive. If you have things on the drive which you dont want to lose try restarting the computer as this might be the cause. If this does not work try a different usb port as the particular usb port might not be responding. Hope this has been helpful. take care

Try it in all the USB sockets available in your laptop. Try it in a desktop computer. Try a different cable.
Sometimes the USB connectors in a laptop are unable to deliver the full current rated in the USB specifications, and the drive can't start.
Also cables sometimes add to the problem, as they have too thin wires causing too much voltage drop.

I dropped my WD Passport 750gb drive. When connected the light comes on and blinks at times, I can also feel the disk spinning, and it makes some sounds like 'sparks'. After a while (3-5 minutes)...

You can try to open the hard drive cabinet and to put the hard drive into another cabinet in order to see if the problem comes from the unit itself

I am not able to connect my passport to my pc..lead light is steady n it showing in my pc like device is malfuctioned....wht to do ,,plz help asap


Try each of these methods step by step if solved in any step get backup ASAP
the good news is: if the LED is ON you may have a chance

1.Use Minimal cord, detach all other USB's, check your power2.Turn off power options3.Try Restarting your system4.Carefully Try system restore3.Download & update Firmware software from WD website4.You may need to Install SmartWare_Windows_Upgrader first5.In any step if the hard drive was recognized back up your data immediately6.if none of above You will need experts having PC3000 to get your data back
the bad news is that: if the LED is OFF or PC3000 doesn't recognize your hard drive you may need a new exactly the same hard drive with the same SN to replace it's board to get your data back.

unlike other brands which use laptop hard drives, that can be plugged into a PC directly, WD uses it's own board with access services on the hard and if the board is damaged you may have a serious problem.


this is a problem I have been through.
unfortunately the "lovely WD my passport" is Totally Not Reliable and you can not count on it.

When I plug my 1TB WD external hardrive into my laptop the light with the lock on it lights up and my laptop doesn't respond to it at all.


It says it is password protected...
U need to unlock the HDD from the computer which was installed initially...
U need to unlock the drive with the help of the password that is used in the software supplied along with it....

Please tell me what wrong with my WD passport, it work normal when i connected it to computer, but when it is connected to laptop, it does not work, it does not get any power (no light indicated). Thanks


USB ports carry electricity, as well as data.

While the USB ports on your desktop are OK, the USB ports on your laptop are not sending enough voltage/amperage to power your device.

There exist 'Y-cables' that connect to TWO USB ports on the laptop, and draw power from BOTH ports, to push more power to the device. Try such a cable.

Western Digital Essential 1TB flashing white light & not responding. When you plug it in it you get a solid light, it spins for about a minute to two minutes & then the white power led starts...


hi i had the same problem, this is what i did. turn off the power supply and smack it about a bit then try it this should work!

i swear it worked for me, i think my kids must have dropped it which stuck the drive smacking it realised it.

Update your firmware, i had the same problem, i updated the firmware and everything works fine now.
