Your clutch drum is held on with a Torx head screw which is screwed into the end of the crankshaft. To lock the engine up so crank won't turn, remove the spark plug, rotate the engine so the piston is down and put some clean pull rope or otherwise soft material in cylinder. ...make sure it is something that won't hang up in the ports on the sides. Then when you rotate the crank, it will compress the rope or soft material, locking up the engine to facilitate removal of the Torx screw, The screw will come loose but will probably not come all the way out...that's just the way they made it.

Rycgl gave a great solution for removing the clutch drum, but after the clutch drum is removed, you have to remove the clutch itself from the shaft. It's threaded on, and there's an arrow on the clutch assembly that tells you which way to turn it to remove it (CCW). Once that is removed, you can take the casing off the motor, remove a cover plate, and get to the incredi-pull assembly. Mine went south, to, and it was because the incredi-pull loops the cord around two plastic rollers that rotate around plastic shafts. Of course plastic doesn't hold up very well, so over time, one of the rollers stopped rotating, and the cord cut a slot in the roller and its supporting shaft, which in turn bound up the cord so it wouldn't retract. Fortunately, I caught it before it cut all the way through the shaft, and I replaced the roller with a short piece of 3/8'copper tubing. It works OK, but I'm not holding out too much hope for it to last a long time. Hope this helps.

How can the starter cord be repaired/replaced on a DR Trimmer/Mower with a 6.5 OHV Briggs-Stratton engine.

Replacement cord kits are available in home improvement stores. If the screen cover is pop riveted on you'll need to get replacement pop rivets and a tool to install them. Otherwise, remove the bolts holding it in place and remove the screen. Unwind the broken cord, paying attention as to the direction of the wind. Replace the cord and attach it to the one-way clutch. Don't forget to put the new cord thru the hole in the screen before attaching it to the clutch. Now wind the clutch so the spring starts to pull the cord into the clutch. Pull on the cord to see if it's operating correctly. Once you're satisfied, go ahead and reinstall the screen on the engine.

Replace pull cord

Replacing a pull cord is not easy. After you remove the shaft, then the drum cover, you are left with the drum and clutch. There is a screw in the center of the drum which has to come off. Then there is a the clutch which if not removed correctly will come apart on you. Only after both parts are remove can you get to the pull cord.

How do you change the clutch?

Remove the side casing. (bar side)
Take off bar and chain.
Remove E-clip holding the clutch drum on.
Remove clutch drum and needle cage bearing.
This should expose the clutch.
Remove spark plug.
Use a piston stop to stop the piston rising, Sometimes a knotted piece of pull cord fed into the cylinder is just as good.
Turn the clutch clockwise with a socket to unscrew.

To put clutch back on turn anticlockwise till piston cycles back and hits the piston stop again and tighten. Replace spark plug and clutch drum, bearing, bar and chain and side casing.

Chain revolves when pulling starting cord. Difficult to start and when it goes the chain is permanently engaged. Cluch? What does a worn clutch look like and can I replace it myself?

Yes it could well be the clutch, if the springs are weak, or have broken, however it could also be the drum bearing, if this has not be lubricated it can seize on the crank and will turn the chain all the time, either way you need to remove the clutch and drum, if you can pull the clutch shoes out by hand the springs have gone weak, if the drum does not turn freely on the crank, it may be just a case of lubricating the bearing.

How to remove clutch?

You have to pull the spark plug and fill the cylinder with some small rope then using a big pair of locking pliers you can loosen the clutch. There should be markings on the clutch as to the direction to unloosen.

Replacing pull cord on weedeater

there is another t20 screw in the neck of the drum. once removed you will expose the drive clutch. soak it good with WD40 then unscrew it from the shaft. if you have all the housing screws out, you should be able to simply remove the housing to expose the pull cord assembly, screwed to housing.
