Question about Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop

3 Answers

I get an error message whenever I try to start up - it's the black screen with Windows Boot Manager; it tells me to insert the windows installation disk to repair the problem. I've done this, but with no response. This is a refurbished computer, and after several problems already, I'm a little skeptical as to the quality of Dell's refurbished products. Can you help me? Thanks.

Refurbished or not, it should be covered by warranty. I would suggest demanding a repair or replacement of your unit. You shouldn't have to spend time fighting with a clearly defective product.
Good luck!

I would be skeptical with Dells new products let alone refurbs however, enter the BIOS on boot (either F2 or delete key,I can't remenber which0 and set the boot option to boot from cd.
You should be OK from there to do a fresh install, just follow the onscreen prompts.

It seems that whatever you did to the boot loader modified Windows so badly that the repair process no longer recognises it as a valid Windows installation. There is a remote chance that the damage is in the registry. If so then here are a couple of options to restore it:
a) Boot into Repair Mode, using your Repair CD, then use System Restore.
b) Boot into Repair Mode / Command Prompt, then do this:
1. Identify the correct drive letter for your Windows installation. It could be a drive other than C: but it won't be X:. You do it by typing the commands
dir C:\Win*
dir D:\Win*
dir E:\Win*
until you find the Windows folder.
I will call that drive "Q:".
2. Type these commands:
cd /d Q:\windows\System32\config
xcopy *.* Q:\RegBack\
cd RegBack
dir
3. Examine the dates of the Software, System and SAM files. Were the files created before or after your problem became apparent?
4. If they were made before the problem became apparent then you can type these commands:
copy /y software ..
copy /y System ..
copy /y Sam ..
(the two dots are part of each command)
5. Reboot normally. If things do not work out then you can backtrack by copying the original registry files from Q:\Regback to Q:\Windows\System32\config.

You should be able to do a clean install of Windows. Just insert the installation disc and press any key when indicated. Optical drive needs to be the first boot option. Go into BIOS and change it is not.
As for disc, you have to use the same Windows version as indicated on the MS Product Key sticker, because of the serial number.

If you have external USB and/or CD disconnect them and try again. Otherwise it could be a fault hard rive - try to boot from an emergency CD (hopefully you created one when you installed Windows).

hello, sounds like memory issue, I would say if you have more than one stick of memory in it remove one at a time and try it again.
also while you are at it reset BIOS by remove battery from motherboard and/or switching jumper setting.

hope it helps.

on a friend's Windows 98 SE or Windows ME computer, create a floppy "Startup disk". Insert in your pc floppy drive and turn on. If floppy drive was not accessed, then get to BIOS and ensure "Boot from floppy drive" is set prior to "boot from hard drive". Once at first screen, select "Boot with CD-ROM driver". Insert CD-ROM and initiate entire re-install of Windows. Windows may do some self-restarting. At first restart do this: get to BIOS and ensure "Boot from hard drive" is set prior to "boot from floppy drive".
