Broken attachment knob on brand new Kitchenaid Mixer

I found a brand new Kitchenaid Mixer that has a broken attachment knob. Apparently the plastic is broken around the screw. Can this be fixed??

Hi LPAYNE724, If you have all the pieces of plastic, you might try ‘super’ gluing them back together around the screw, but you might be better off purchasing a completely new knob.
You say the mixer is brand new. Is it still under warranty? If so I’d contact the KA immediately and tell them about your problem with the stir speed not working. The KA website is at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home. Click on Customer Care>Contact Us> and the toll free phone number is listed to speak with someone. You can also look under the Warranty & Service Plans to see what KA will do for you. I've extracted parts of it here:

Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> enter the visitor type “Consumer” and then Enter the 6 character model number, in your case: KP26M1, and select one of the first two files listed under Parts List (47) (The first file, KP26M1XAZ4.pdf (304.18 KB), is for a -4 series model and the second file, KP26M1XAZ5.pdf (724.41 KB) is for a -5 series with slightly different insides, so make sure you have the correct Parts List manual.)
For a series -4 mixer, turn to pgs. 4 & 4, titled Case, Gearing And Planetary Unit that shows an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the parts. Locate Illus. No. 4, Thumb Screw. (For a series -5 mixer, turn to Pgs 4 & 5, and locate Illus. No. 23, Thumb Screw). You’ll want either the black or grey Thumb Screw. The parts are the same for both series mixers, so take your pick.
Here are five potential online vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com; and Grainger.com (for grease). You should search for ‘food grade grease’ online (although I’ve seen automotive bearing grease used too – your call). Prices can vary widely between vendors, so do some comparison shopping.

Runs but doesn't turn. Worm gear is not broken.


Something must be broken if the motor is turning and the planetary is not. It will be one of the following, we will start from the first point of contact with the armature
1) Worm gear broken (fuse gear) you say no teeth broken
2) Worm gear not broken but whole unbroken plastic part not gripping aluminium boss
3) Pin through worm gear broken or missing
4) Pin through centre (or bevel) gear broken or missing
5) Pin through small gear in planetary broken or missing
6) Pin through planetary hub centre shaft broken or missing

The most common ones in order of likelihood are, 1, 2, 3 and 6

Kitchenaid Mixer Planetary becomes sluggish when met with resistance.


The problem will be with the worm gear, if the gear is not stripped then check that the locating pin for the worm gear is not broken or missing. Occasionally the plastic gear can detach from the aluminium boss between plastic and shaft. The worm gear is the 99.9% place where drive can slip. Afterthought, I suppose the planetary pin is not missing or broken??

Knob for kitchaid stand mixer


I am assuming you mean the little black knob on the speed control has broken off. I will post the solution for that problem.
The speed control lever on KitchenAid mixers has a little black knob on the end (in some cases this may be white or gray). The knob is pressed onto the lever, so if the knob breaks off your only option is to replace the whole lever.

The lever kit includes the speed control lever (with knob), speed link, spring, instructions and a gearbox gasket.

How old is your mixer? There was a time that they shipped with a plastic gearbox, and it frequently failed. Kitchenaid went back to all-metal parts after a while.

I have the same issue, but there were no parts - just an attachment drive gear that does not turn.

Are attachments for a KitchenAid K5 compatible with the K55?


That would be incorrect. If the attachment is for a hobart kitchenaid mixer then it will fit all models of kitchenaid mixers including the brand new pro series because the attachment port and drive gear has not been changes since 1925 or 6 when it was first introduce by the Hobart company.

KitchenAid classic motor works but does not turn mixer. I removed the black knobs on either side of the mixer that house a spring attached to a black piece of something that appears to be broken. any ideas...


that black piece is the spinner that cannot be repaired it is the seperate part and will be available at the local mixer repair center near to $5 just get that part and get it fixed it will work properly after that.if you yourself do not want to do take it to the repair center they will hardly charge any dollars if you buy that part from them.

Hi. Stop using your mixer. If your mixer is still covered by warranty, call Kitchenaid Customer Service, they are very good with warranty repairs.

If your mixer is out of warranty, remove the silver band that surrounds the top of mixer. Remove the top cover. At the front of the mixer, locate the transmission housing which is now exposed. Examine this housing carefully for cracks. If you find cracks anywhere in this housing, you have found the under-engineered plastic transmission housing. Kitchenaid's replacement housing is made of metal. Your plastic housing has no business being in a mixer that is marketed as being able to mix bread dough. It cannot!

If you're confident that you can make the repairs yourself, go to the Kitchenaid website and download the parts drawings. Remove the Trans. housing, remove the worm gear shaft assembly which is driven by the motor.. Remove and save as much grease as necessary to thoroughly inspect the worm gear. Inspect the worm shaft bearings. Look for cracks, or missing pieces on the bearings. Look for crunched cogs on all gears. Be prepared to wait at least a month for your parts to arrive after you order them. The replacement grease should be Shell Darina 2, or Chevron FM ALC EP 2.

If you're not confident about repairing this yourself, call Kitchenaid and determine the nearest "approved" repair shop.

You may be able to pressure Kitchenaid to pay for the damaged parts in your mixer. They are still installing these plastic Trans. housing on new mixers. Insist on a metal cover when replacing. Apparently, Kitchenaid feels no shame in their manufacturing process, and will not issue a recall notice for these housings. They are substandard at best.
