Question about Garmin nuvi 255W GPS Receiver

3 Answers

The touch screen on my nuvi 255w will not respond to any touch. If left alone, it will go to map and show where you are, but not allow you to access menu or anything at all. When first powered on, it appears to be trying to configure the screen and says "press dot", but the screen does not detect a touch.

I do not think I can calibrate the machine - it will not accept/respond to any touch. When the press dot screen comes up, you can press anywhere and there is NO response.

  • coxfam4 Jul 08, 2010

I cannot find a reset button ANYWHERE on this machine. Does the garmin nuvi 255w have one? Also, how can I answer yes on the screen when it will not respond to touch?

The ribbon contacts to the touch screen can become loose, and it happens a lot. Luckily, a lot of kids have gotten desparate, and, not having the money to have it repaired, figure it out themselves. The process is intense, involving taking it apart, and heating up the back of the display until the contacts "heat fuse" back together. I haven't seen that procedure for GPS Displays, but they're the same basic design for all touch screens. Otherwise, you will have to have it replaced. I couldn't find a GPS video, but here is the process for an ipod:

Good luck, and hope this helps.

Hi there Coxfam4,

Here is what you try to do. While your Nuvi 255w is on, try to turn it OF. Then after like 5 seconds, turn back on by holding the Power key (do not release until the calibration screen appears with the "Press dot". And then try if it can now respond to touch.

Please let me know how this goes. Thank you for choosing FixYa.

If I hold the button over to hold on until the calibration screen comes on, it shuts off. Now it will come up to the calibration screen and the only place that responds to touch is the very top center, so when the "press dot" dot moves, you cannot press where it is.

Where is the reset button? I cannot find it anywhere?

Ok try this one. This will however restore your unit to original settings and all that is saved will be erased.

See of you can find a reset button on the bottom of the unit, try to press that and hold until it restarts. Otherwise, press your finger on lower right hand part of gps screen
while powering it on by upsliding the power switch to ON for 8 seconds. You should see a pop up window. Select to touch yes to clear user data.

Please let me know how this goes again.

When I turn on the garmen 255w it states loading maps, the green lines goes across, then the screen goes blank. I have tried this plugged in and unplugged. I have turned it off and back on. I have let it...

Hello,

the problem is actually a software issue and since resetting does not solve the problem,I think updating the deice should solve the problem. Update is just like reinstall the system software of the unit and it might get things fixed.

To perform update, follow the below procedures;

1. Plug one end of the USB cable into your GPS and the other end into your desktop or laptop computer. The GPS device will load the appropriate driver automatically, and a message on your GPS tells you that it is connected to your computer via USB.

2. Open your Internet browser of choice and type in the following web address: http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27

3. Download the appropriate version of the software for your computer (Windows or Apple) and Install the WebUpdater by following the wizard (accept defaults).

4. Click "Start," "Programs," "Garmin" and " WebUpdater" to update your firmware and your maps. Periodically check and make sure your software is current.

If the computer does not recognize the Gps, you can try the below procedure;

With the unit OFF, hold your right thumb on the Upper, Left part of the screen and plug the USB plug from your computer into the back of your GPS. The unit should boot up and stop at the screen where it shows a little computer, wire, and little GPS. Your computer should now show the GPS as connected. Only now you can pull your thumb from the screen.

Then use Webupdater to upload 4.40 to your GPS.

Hopefully, the above should be helpful

Good luck.

Then you have to calibrate the screen since it is not responding to touch. To calibrate the screen, follow the steps below:

  3. While holding your finger on the touch screen for about 30 seconds until the calibration screen comes appears (white screen with touch dot),

It is an easy fix. The solution above will help you out on that. Another solution is for you to remove the battery and fix it in back. That should also help.

Screen seems OK but there is no way to interface as it does not respond to touch. Unit is 255w and about 2 years old.

The solution to this problem is for you to calibrate the screen. Before calibrating the screen, i will advice you reset the gps. To reset your device, hold down the power button for about 15 seconds, it will restart itself and power up fully, if the touch screen does not still work, then calibrating the screen will do the job for you. To calibrate the screen, follow the steps below:
  1. Turn off your nuvi,
  2. Hold the upper left corner of the screen, then turn on the nuvi,
  3. Release the power key once the garmin screen appears,
  4. Continue to hold the upper left corner of the screen for 30 seconds till a white screen with 'touch dots' appears,
  5. Then follow the rest of the guide from there.
It might take a few tries before it works for you but you have to keep trying till you get it right. I am very certain that this will work for you.

How do i update my Nuvi 255W garmin GPS

To update your nuvi, all you need to do is to connect your nuvi to an internet connected computer and the updates will show on the lower left of your computers screen, click on it and it will update it with the latest software version and maps.
You can also go to your nuvis website and search for latest updates. Just click on the map link and a list will pop up under the map link, select update maps if it is maps you want to update. It will ask you to choose your device from a list, after choosing your nuvi 255w then it will show you the latest maps for your gps, but you have to install its plug ins first.
That is how to update your gps.
