SOURCE: 02 flht, new battery, cleaned contacts, no lights, starter relay

The starter relay should not make a sound until you press the starter button. If this is what is happening, replace the starter relay. The little one inch plastic cube cost less than $20 and just plugs in.

Now, you said it was a "new battery". Is this a brand new just bought battery or is one that seems like you replaced it just the other day? I've had people bring me bikes into the shop with "new" batteries only to find them bad. Sometimes a battery doesn't last but about a year in a bike. The reason is vibration. A motorcycle has much more vibration than an automobile and is tougher on the battery. It's best to pull the battery out and have it tested at an automotive parts house. Usually, they'll do this free. Your battery could be the problem. Turn your headlights on and push the starter button. If you the lights go out, bad battery. Good Luck!

Your speedometer is driven by the transmission on your '70 model FLH. But, if you want to put a front wheel speedo drive on the bike, first take a look at a bike that has a front wheel speedo drive. You'll notice that the hub right where the axle goes through has a "notch" in it and the speedo drive has a "tab" that goes into the notch. As the wheel turns, the hub turns the speedo drive. This is how it works.

Now, you have two problems, One is that you need a speedo drive that has the spacer built into it so that you can eliminate a spacer on one side of the hub. Next, is the ratio of the speedo drive. The ratio of the speedo drive must match the speedo or the indicated speed will be incorrect. The speedo ratio for your FLH is probably 1:1 since it's a transmission driven speedo.

Good luck

The plastic tube thing is a screen. If it's got years worth of crud on it or rust in the hole, it will get stuck. The only thing left to do is destroy it to get it out. I have an old dental tool that is shaped like a hook that I use to get them out with. You have to get a grip on it and pull while twisting at the same time. I think Custom Chrome used to sell replacement screens. Maybe the dealer has them but don't tell them what year your bike is. They'll immediately tell you that they don't have it. The same screen is still used in bikes today that have a petcock on them. Personally, I'd rather have a Pingel petcock. They're pricey but it's the end of petcock troubles.

Good Luck

Well, it depends. On some open primary set-ups, you can use stock starter parts and on others you must use their starter plates and the starter they specify. Your '74 model had the Hitachi starter on it and a lot of the belt drive inner primarys and outer clutch shells are set up to use the later Nippondenso type starter. My best advice is to contact the people that made the belt drive on your bike and get their recommendations.
