Try to go into control panel or help and delete the subroutines that usually load with the full version of windows xp.

Also, getting a faster disk drive can do the trick

Getting a SSD or solid state disk drive made my system start up 3 or 4 times as fast.

Good luck with this.

You didn't say what your OS is? 32? 64? Vista? xp? Easy hardware upgrade is add memory, you have 1GB, upgrade to 4GB's for 32bit or more for 64bit OS. Another easy upgrade is a faster HDD, yours is 5400rpm's go to a 7200rpm HDD. Of course, Clean and slim down the software. Download, if you don't have, freeware CCLEANER at :http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/, This freeware program will clean the junk from your machine. In the TOOLS section, STARTUP section, disable ALL unnessary startup programs, Toolbars, etc. This will speed up start and running processes. Slow Windows Machine! Try disabling startup programs. Go to Start > Run and type MSConfig. In Startup tab, uncheck anything that you don't want Windows to load automatically. It will make Windows boot faster and use less resources while running. This just disables them in startup. Programs will still load, but when only you initiate. Consider increasing RAM.Uninstall any extras like those pushy toolbars, and add-ons.

Two possible solutions.
Roll back system with System Restore. Win 7 - Start > Search type System Restore. XP - Is Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Restore. Now choose a date prior to problem. You may have to try a few dates.

Desktop theme changes at startup

That's not supposed to be a problem... When you log in to your account windows loads your personal settings, as well as other programs, so it's supposed to take time. Windows probably has the theme set on default so it would show that while your settings are loading. That or you've got a virus... But... if you think your computer is unusually slow then that's a different problem. Try cleaning up your hard disk space and doing other sorts of stuff, like scanning for viruses to make it run faster.
