Question about byD sign 3032 30 in. HD-Ready LCD Television

The picture on my BYD:sign 3032 has been going out, sound is OK

The picture on my 4 yr old ByD:sign 3032 has been going out but the sound remains. It happens regardless of source ie. cable box or DVD. Turning it off and then on used to fix it but now the picture only comes on for a moment and then goes black. I don't even see the outline of an image the screen in totally black. The power light shows power. Any clues as to what is wrong?

as a follow up, turning the tv off and on repeatedly seems to bring the picture back. Does this support or hinder the solution provided?

It's a backlight or backlight inverter issue. (The backlight itself usually fades or makes the on-screen image change to pink/red.) For an out-of-warranty TV, open up the back of the TV and remove the shielding. Look for any scorch marks or bulging or damaged capacitors. (Sometimes other parts will fail on this part but these can be spotted easily. Capacitors look like cylinders on a tripod.)

If you borrow (or have a) high-end multimeter (able to measure high frequencies - 50 kHz) or an oscilloscope, hold the multimeter probes a fraction of an inch apart about an inch above the board and power up the TV. If you see a 1 or an actual value, you have a good inverter. If you see a reading near 0, the board is bad or the multimeter can't resolve the frequency.

In either case, you can buy a replacement inverter for $50-150 and just do a simple swap. Disconnect all of the wires (connections are similar to molex and ribbon cables in a computer) and remove board (a few screws usually). Connect the cables to the new inverter. (If you google backlight inverter replacement, you'll find videos and text descriptions.) Note the part number on the board, including the Rev number, and order the exact one ( or are good starting points). Universal inverters do exist but can result in reversed controls (up to lower the brightness). Replacing individual parts on the board is cheaper but more prone to not tracking down all of the bad parts.

If the inverter is good, then it's probably backlights themselves (several in most TVs). These are sandwiched on the perimeter of the TV (usually under some tape that holds the lamp, reflector and other parts together. You need to order by length and width and get ones for your TV size. Remove the tape, and separate the reflector (make a note of how things are put together) then you have to Dremel (or use another rotary tool) to remove the plastic to get the backlight out. (They are often molded into the frame.) Then put in the new backlight and reassemble everything.

With a good spare backlight, you can test an inverter for condition (plug together and turn on the tv while the box is open). Similarly a good inverter can test the backlight.

I hope this helps.

If the power cycling helps recover the image, the part that is failing has possibly a bad solder connection on the board. Most of the time, it is impossible to spot which point has to have the old solder removed and then replaced. (A magnifying glass might let you spot the problem areas but it is tough.)

Replacing the entire board is a better option. I hope this helps.

(When you do the power cycling, expansion and contraction changes how the solder is touching the board and the component until it fits together better.)

Thanks for addressing my additional comments. Which board would I need to replace and how much would it cost? Would it be located on the panel itself or the breakout box where all the connections go?

Since the sound remains, it is not the breakout box. The prices of inverters (which drive the backlights) range from $50 up depending on the number of backlights that are connected (6-8 is likely for a 30" TV). I'm not sure of the prices of other components. However, you need the part number off the boards in your TV to get the exact quotes. (byD:sign is not a listed manufacturer at . They may get their TVs manufactured by another company with a change of nameplate.)

I wish that I could be of more help. However, I'd need to see the labels on the different boards to get the quotes. The labels are usually very clear black type on white labels so they are easy to find.

I took out the back light inverter and had it checked by a local shop. It was ok. There was mention made that since the sound remains it could be the dc power supply as opposed to the ac power supply. Any thoughts would by greatly appreciated.

Most monitors only have one power supply and then you have the AC/DC inverter. It is possible that one branch (or wire) from the power supply to the boards has failed. Think of a desktop power supply - some have multiple rails so that the power can be balanced to the various components. Even the ones that only have one rail can have a problem with say the 3.3V side.

Unfortunately, I've never seen only one part of a monitor power supply fail. I'm not even sure what voltage you'd expect at each cable from the power supply to test this premise. This exceeds my trouble-shooting skills.
