With out knowing which model you have, what you can do is go to
http://www.generac.com/Service/ManualSearch/
and download a free manual for your system. This will give you the information you've requested.
What you're looking for is the diagram of the transfer switch. The back up generator only powers specific circuts based on it's output.

Generac power management module install

Mount the transformer on the generator. Hard wire it into a 120 vac plug. Run wires to the module and connect to the coil on the relay. Now run the load you want to disconnect while the generator is running to the load terminals of the relay in the module.

Have a Generac EXL8000 and wires have been pulled loose from the switches and plugins and control panel.

This is an older generator. If you have the owners manual, there should be wiring schematics that give the wiring legends to all of the connections. I can't find a downloadable .pdf manual for your generator. If you don't have the manual, you'll likely have to take your generator to a service center for repair & testing.

Yes, if ANY load circuits on the third phase was ALSO connected to the transfer panel circuits, a sneak path would allow the third phase from the power company to backfeed this [panel causing damage.

Generac 4456 does not start on power loss

I install and work on these everyday. If you hooked up the transfer switch you probable have a control wire wrong. check the utility power sense wire. That lets it no when to start in auto. it could be a relay or fuses. or a control board.

Generac Guardian 15kW Generator

That sounds just about right, if the relay contacts get welded together it sometimes takes out the driver on the printed circuit board. As you found out, 12vdc from 23 to 194 makes the transfer switch move to the Generator position, relay not energized makes the ATS move to the Normal position.

You can make a nice test function by installing a 10 amp contact switch in series with either the N1 or N2 terminals. When the switch is open the generator thinks the Normal power has failed.

Carl

There will be some re-wiring necessary but no more than a Generator Technician can handle. Check your local phone book for generator dealers. You will pay extra because of the mixed system and because you thought you could save money by doing it yourself and not purchasing the system from a dealer. You get what you pay for!
