Question about Sony KP-46WT500 46" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

Locate Convergence IC's

From what I've read so far, I should replace both the convergence IC's (part stk392-560).

I downloaded the service manual, but haven't been able to locate them on any of the board diagrams. Is there a different number Sony uses in their manuals?
Which board is it on?

The ICs are located on the D board Tan board on the lower left side looking in from the rear. They old Ics will need to be desoldered and replacements soldered in. Also check the yellow pico fuses located under the fins of the ICs heat sink, usually some of those will be open ( Blown) replace them with 3.5 amp pico fuses.

Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kit for your exact model. The kit includes a photo instruction guide, original Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, etc. Everything you need to fix it yourself.

You have to pull the chasis completly out the set. Make sure you know where all the wires go that u have to unplug. Also u may need to change open resistors near the convergence amplifiers.

Pin 10 should be at the positive convergence power voltage. The ICs run on a plus and minus voltage from a power supply. Usually +/- 15V to +/- 30V. (don't know this brand.) (not sure if -570 is replacement for -560; could be.) I'd look through main power supply for these 2 voltages. Ohm to pin 10, etc. Check PS fuses there.

How do I fix a converence problem?

Hi.

First try using Autofocus. If there is a convergence problem this won't fix the problem.

Try using the convergence alignment procedure from service manual.

Here the procedure that works on most Hitachi rear projection.

Here the grid with convergence problem

If the procedure does not work, then the two STK392-110 on convergence board must be replaced.

Before replacing the ICs you can test the pico fuses located on convergence boards. Simply read ohms to test if they have continuity.

Better also testing components on convergence board like resistors located at the base of STKs.

After removing the old STK, the new ones must be re-soldered using cooling paste.

Price for single IC can is about $8/$20. I think
STK392-110 on this model can be better replaced with STK392-150. I suggest contacting the seller on this.

The service manual is available here.

RCA model P61950

fl231 is the convergence fuse, and is soldered to the board in proximity of the convergence ICS, on RCA rear projection TVs.

If
fl231 has blown, TV usually does not turn on at al, if you get bowed picture, that means that the convergence ICs must be replaced.

The fuse is on the same board where you find convergence ICs, if the fuse had blown, or the pico fuses at the base of the STK convergence ics had blown, the STKs must be replaced.
There is need of purchasing the service manual to do the job.

The repair shuld be done by a technician.

This is the convergence IC, model may vary:

Toshiba TW56X81 Convergence issues

I retired from the TV repair business because if you are not an authorized repair service center most manufacturers will not even talk to you. If you are electronically inclined you can repair this tv. your problem is a bad convergence ic. you need to be able to locate it and replace it. it probably has about 15 or 18 legs that need to be unsoldered and a new replacement re-installed

HC-P4752W - IC Replacement vs Convergence Module.

The colors weren't lining up correctly on my HC-P4752W which is only about 30 months old. I did a little bit of research and got ahold of the people at http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/ They recommended replacing the IC's as well as the IC resistors. I purchased the replacement parts from their site and made the repairs myself. I should mention that I didn't have any previous soldering experience. The repair was easy and a complete success. You may find replacement parts elsewhere for slightly cheaper but what you won't find is the prompt and detailed customer service that they provide. They gave me there # and said to call if I had any questions before or during repair. I took advantage of their services and got answers every time I called.

Problem could be low voltage from power supply as well as the amp ic for the convergence board. Need to take voltage readings from the test points on the board and compare them to the readings you should be getting from the service manual.

Oh no it is less expensive to repair the printed circuit boards. You should buy only the IC,s that sony recomends you to buy. They will cost you more then a replacement IC will but they are not all alike even if they have the same numbers on them. Go to http://www.partstore.com and enter your model number and look for the STK IC. Don't forget to get some heatsink compound to install on the back of the new IC's before you reinstall them.. Remember to always double or triple check your work and make sure you have no solder bridges or shorts on the board. If you need a copy of the service manual, post your e-mail addy and I will send you one thru Pando. Pando is available online at www.pando.com for a free download. Pando lets you send large files via e-mail and the Sony manual is large. Good Luck
