Have you considered NOT connecting the camera to the computer?

1. How could you have tried with a card reader if you don't have a card reader? What kind of problems?

2. Nikon Transfer works just as well with a card reader as with a camera connected via USB. Have you tried it with a card reader, without a camera attached? 1.
