Question about Meade 884 Tripod

3 Answers

Problem with the thumb screws on Meade 884 Tripod that tighten to hold each of the sliding legs in place. The brass thread inserts are pulling out of the black plastic body of the leg adjusters. How can they be repaired and if not where can I get new parts. I live in Sydney Australia.

Getting parts or after sales service from Mead is next to impossible. Their parts come from backyard manufacturers in Mexico. The forums that discuss this are full of negative comments about Mead after sales and lack of parts. the attitude is ..Buy another full product.. as we don't supply spares..
Your only real option is to truy and repair the threads by tapping them back in place and using A FIBERGLASS mixture to re bury them in the plastic .

The second option is to trry one of the local australian distributors for a repair. But don;t hold your breath about them being any more able to get parts, but if you don't ask you don't get the answer.

Adturner,

Did you solve this problem or manage to find parts? I have the exact same problem and tried glueing but this did not work. I am in Wollongong AU so would be interested in knowing more.

Hi adturner. Get a tube of clear one minute epoxy. This wonderful adhesive will get you back up and running in no time. Just be prepared with a pair of pliers so that the moment you have applied the epoxy you can squeeze the brass insert back into the plastic body. J.

Can I get parts for a damaged tripod

Contact the importer or manufacturer, telling them the exact make and model number, plus a full description of the problem, with photos if possible. Alternatively, take it to a nearby camera shop or repair facility.

Legs Locks Loose

Ross
-It is possible that you are overloading the tripod, thus causing this problem (check specs on tripod model)
HOWEVER IF YOU AREN'T....Giotto uses (2) different leg lock designs..., quick release (normally adjusted by a socket wrench) or rotary (screw locks)!
- If tripod uses screw locks, sometimes foreign material gets into the mechanism and either damages it or prohibits from tightening!!!!!
Note: rotary locks are easy to maintain & if you need parts..., they are user replaceable and usually inexpensive! (contact Giottos distributor in the country you live in)!!!
BUT FIRST!!!! (often problem is caused by dirty lock mechanism)
-carefully unscrew the leg lock (that is slipping) until it separates from the leg higher leg section & carefully pull out the lower tube (at the top of the lower tube will be 'shims' that are part of the lock mechanism).
-Look closely at existing 'shims' do they show signs of cracking, of a build up of dirt, etc. (if damaged they will need to be replaced)
-if shims are undamaged..., use rubbing alcohol & a clean cloth to clean shims and both the tube they sit on and the inside of the tube they slide into.
-once both sides of the tubes and both male & female threads of the locking mechanism are cleaned..., place a light coating of a light oil into the threads (sewing machine oil, bike chain oil, etc)...., do not get oil on the shims!!!!!
-replace locking shims back into position and carefully slide leg tube back into place..., then screw locking collar on (this should not take any force..., if while threading lock collar back on..., it seems tight..., back off collar and check positioning of shims). Repeat procedure!!!
TEST RESULTS!!!
Note: in most cases with rotary locks, problem is purely a maintenance issue, cleaning usually fixes the issue!!!

The screws on my tripod will not tightened

Take out the whole Camera Plate. there is a plastic cap on the top of the tripoid, right by the end of your tripod extender, that comes out with a little pulling it. Now, have a look at the end of the knob housing from which your screw accidentaly came out. You will see a perfect spot in wich you need to re- insert the nut that came out. Once you do it, all you need to do is to re- insert the knob back into place, and it will "bite" the nut again at the end of the housing. Re- install the whole plate back on top of your tripod. Finally, put the plastic cap back at the top. You might need to gently tap it in. Done deal . Problem resolved ! Enjoy your tripod !

Need the plastic foot on the tripod leg.

Try going to the Meade website home page, find your Tripod parts section and see if you can order a rplacement foot for it. It should be fairly cheap.
or try this link:

My oster 76 clippers will kick out the two screws that hold the blade holder on

do the screws undo or do the brass inserts pull out of the body housing which the retaining screws fit into.
if the screws undo put some thread lock on the threads.
if its the brass inserts you will need to replace the mainbody.

Reassembling telescopic sections for a 676B monopod

Each leg lock has a leg locking lever and a screw that hold the clamp assembly tight to the leg. Unlock the leg lock lever, loosen the screw above it that holds the clamp tight to the leg. The legs should fit into each other sice each leg is slightly larger or smaller then then next one. Slide the clamps in the approprite places and tighten the screw enough to hold the clamp assembly tight, but do not over tighten it. Over tightening will damage the 679 tubes.

You may need to add one or two small washers to the central screw to tighten things up a bit. A "C" clip holds the big screw on the tripod. If you break it any hardware store can supply a replacement for less than $1.00.
