Hello, welcome to Fixya. Can you provide the make and model of the washer you are inquiring about ? As with many frontload washers, especially the smaller drum size european machines, the sound in the hi-speed spin can be quite load, thats normal...to a degree. But first I need to clarify the make of washer you have and second, the model number. Thanks. macmarkus :)

During the spin cycle, my washing machine makes a terrible noise. It's loud and sounds like an airplane either landing or taking off. Any idea what this could be? It's only 2 years old :

Warranty still valid? if so go that route. Owner's manual trouble shooting? My guess is the tub is out of balance. The load of clothes is no longer neatly distributed over the bottom of the tub.
Try to redistribute, it may take a couple of tries, so keep trying.

Not an expert but had identical symptoms. Problem was the loosening of the nut 27mm on the main pully. Simply remove lower back panel (16- torx 20 screws ) and tighten same.

If this does not hold over time, the pully hub has been damaged, and a shim, ( shopmade washer ) may solve problem. Remove belt, and pully, look for damage, and install thin shim, so that the nut will not bottem out on bolt before tightening on the pully hub. Good Luck, Lee

For a few weeks now my spin cycle has sounded like an airplane taking off and today the machine just stopped mid cycle and will no longer begin a cycle

Rear drum bearing failure. Major repair (time and money). Difficulty rating about an 8 on a 1-10 scale, and at least 2 hours labor, if you know what you are doing. I'd advise getting a new washer. Look at a LG (which are direct drive) and get it from a small dealer who has his own service dept, which the big guys either don't have, or are so slow it hurts. PS. make sure you only use about 1 tablespoon of HE laundry detergent per load.

Loud Noise - Spin Cycle

If the washer is making a squealing noise, the problem is more likely to be the basket drive. If it is more like a rattling sound, the centerpost bearings are probably worn out. Open machine's rear panel and spin the basket manually by turning the drive pulley, to find out from where exactly the noise come from. Defective part should be replaced. Good luck !!
