Anti-virus software is a unique software program, which is used to prevent, detect and remove malicious programs, including but not limited to computer viruses, computer worm, Trojan Horses, Spyware and Adware.

The primary method of preventing the propagation of malicious code involves the use of anti-virus software. Anti-virus software is an application that is installed on a system to protect it, and to scan for viruses as well as worms and Trojan horses. Most viruses have characteristics that are common to families of virus. Anti-virus software looks for these characteristics or fingerprints to identify and neutralize viruses before they impact you.

There are many types of known viruses, and new ones are added all the time, so in this situation without anti-virus software your computer will be at great risk. There are different types of anti-virus software, some of them use basic technique to detect and remove viruses and malicious codes from your pc.

On the other hand some anti-virus software uses its own unique features to protect your pc. Many known anti-virus software uses some very useful method, like Signature base detection and Heuristics base detection to detect viruses and malicious programs, and uses other methods and techniques according to their features. As new viruses added almost every day, anti-virus software companies also upgrade their anti-virus protection products, they launches their new version of antivirus software within very short period of time to provide users maximum protection from most recent threats.

So if you are using any anti-virus software, it is recommended that you upgrade it and its virus definition regularly to be protected from viruses and malicious programs.

Top 5 Paid Anti-Virus Software

With the brand-new Windows 7 operating system released late last year, many computer users opt to install some sort of anti-virus. There are free versions available, but are not routinely kept up-to-date as a paid version. Plus paid versions offer a better support and look nicer to the eye. Here are my best anti-virus programs for 2010.

1. GData Anti-Virus 2010
www.gdata-software.com $25 (one year, single PC license)
Based off of two free anti-viruses BitDefender and Avast, German developed GData brings the two together to form the best anti-virus. GData detected 99.95% of all threats tested and offered the best detection of adware. With its relative low-cost GData is my recommendation for best anti-virus.

2. Symantec Norton Anti-Virus 2010
www.symantec.com $40 (one year, single PC license)
Coming in a close second is the more popular Norton Anti-Virus. The detection rate was 99.49%, just shy of GData. With a great user interface and design, Norton remains one of the better anti-virus programs in 2010 and may better suit non-techie users.
3. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010
www.kaspersky.com $60 (one year, three PC license)
In previous years, Kaspersky has always been at the top, but with this year it has slid down to third. Kaspersky has a wide range of features including a firewall and advanced virus blocking but fails to provide a slick, user-friendly interface unlike the first two anti-virus programs which can get frustrating and confusing. The malware detection also lacks which maybe a problem on some users PC's.

4. BitDefender Anti-Virus 2010
www.bitdefender.com $30 (one year, three PC license)
BitDefender is a decent anti-virus program. Although the detection rate is 99.66%, the second best in the field. What it lacks is a good user interface and fails to remove threats. Only 90% of threats detected were removed successfully. This is defiantly a bargain on price but lacks in some areas where it maybe useful.

5. Panda Anti-Virus Pro 2010
www.pandasecurity.com $50 (one year, three PC license)
Panda Anti-Virus Pro had a 99.83% detection rating, earning it the best in the field. Although it can detect threats, it did poorly in behavioral scans of the PC. Panda also does not come with its own firewall, unlike all the anti-virus programs mentioned. The user interface needs some work around the edges and design could be better. Panda will get the job done, but is a last-ditch option for paid anti-virus programs.

Before you buy, make sure to do research and know what product you want to buy. Don't let the sales people influence you to go with the costlier option, because they say its better. Trust your research and be smart.

I have something constantly poping up telling me I have a virus. It says it is Smart Engine Professional assistant for Windows PC. I don't see it in my list of programs, so I can't delete it, and I can't...

I suggest you install an anti-virus program, any viruses that infects a computer can damage your computer and programs, depending upon the type of infection.
The sooner you remove the virus the better.
There are commercial anti-virus programs available such as mcAfee and Nortons.
There are also freeware anti-virus programs, I recommend AVG.
Please click on this link to download AVG :-

My Acer Aspire 3680 is extremely slow, breaking up, giving error messages. Started yesterday but has gotten continually worse since then.

Have you installed any new programs recently?
Definitely sounds like spy-ware or a virus, check your system out. If you don't have anti-virus software installed, go here:http://shop.trendmicro.com/trialpay/
and run the anti-virus scan. I'm guessing you've got an infectected PC. For a free anti-virus program, you can go here: http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition If after running the anti-virus scan your machine doesn't run better, please post back for more suggestions and best of luck to you!

I cant access anything. anti virus software keeps coming up saying I have 25 serious threats and wants me to buy it. What is going on ? do i need to buy it?

If you can, disconnect the network cable from your computer to stop the virus/trojan from getting to other systems. Let the virus software do it's thing. If you don't have any anti-virus software loaded or haven't renewed your subscription, get that done first. There's lots of sales going on right now and any anti-virus program is better than none. Sometimes it will take several passes to get all of it cleaned.
