I have looked over that hard drive and the two button underneath the Power Button are actually backup buttons. One is for manual backup and the second is for automatic backup.
This will clarify that:

How can you tell when your transfer case goes out in your vehicle I push the button that goes into four wheel drive and it blinks and it won't go or go into gear

Its kind of a tough question .
If your asking how would know for sure after pushing the magic botton if the vehicle is actualy in 4WD.
Its hard to tell what I would do is get all 4 wheels the ground .
Put it jack stands this it tricky and if you don't the equipitment or don't feel comfortable doing this then don't do it
In the old days you had to get out of the vehicle and lock the hubs and you know for sure it was locked .
Remember this never drive it 4 wd on dry pavement the wheels need to slip a little snow or dirt
Its not really 4 wheel drive its a limited slip system so olny 1 front wheel and 1 back wheel are grabbing at any one time so if a wheel slip's on the front on one side the other one will grab the same with the rear to give the best traction.
.These systems that are vaccun opperated or electroicly opperated don't replace locking the hubs .
A bad connection electricaly or the paper clip they tend to use to hold the cable on at the shift point are problmatic at best.

When I'm in 4 wd the front wheels feel like the brakes are being applied when I make a sharp turn. No problems when driving straight or in 2 wd.

It sounds like you are driving in 4wd drive on dry pavement. The front drive axles do not work like the rear differential. When you turn, the outside front wheel must travel farther than the inside wheel, therefore they are traveling through the turn at different speeds. If you are on dry pavement, this causes the gears to bind. You don't notice this on slick surfaces because the outside wheel will slip instead of bind up the gears. You should not use 4wd on dry pavement. That's the advantage of push button, or shift on the fly, 4wd. You can shift back to 2wd when you encounter dry pavement. All wheel drive vehicles don't have this problem because they have a limited slip front differential as opposed to a locking differential on 4wd. Hope I didn;t confuse you too much.

Can't turn on book. I have plugged it into wall. I pressed the round button on the front, was that a mistake? Wont' turn blue and power on. I have tried it in a plug I know works.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files.
For example, see: for a "no data - no charge guarantee".

I own a Memorex DVD player, model MVD2030 which hasn't been used for 6 years (when I moved). Tried to set it up today and find the "open/close" button does not function. Any ideas on how to resolve this...

its not problem at all.
if you have an old stereo or tv set you can use one of the small push botton to replace it.
you will need screw drivers, solder, suction and some patience to do the job. that is if the botton is making bad contact.

the problem can be a bad driving IC.
try to open the casing, locate the open/close motor, turn it manually to fully open tray. plug the set into power and try to close the tray. does this happen and still the tray wont open with the botton, then your driving IC is bad. i dont know if you can change the IC, its small and maybe and SMD.

Exhaust front pipe nuts rusted on

Try using a size 10 metric thin walled socket drive to fit nut with a little force. Use plenty of WD-40, soak the nut and stud. Try to turn nut for 1/8 turn forward, spray WD-40 then turn bolt back until it feels that it is stuck, turn nut 1/2 turn forward, spray WD-40 and try again to unbolt, everytime it feels it is stuck move nut forward, spray WD-40 then try again to unbolt. It is a slow process as it to prevent stripping the rusted nut and stud. Have fun.

Unplug the unit to reset the computer.  Wait 5 minutes.  If the problem still occurs, you will need to have the control board replaced.
