Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

AC Out. Two year old house. Goodman A/C, two units one for upstairs. Cleaned coils of both outside unit, replaced filters, re-set breakers. Upstairs is cooling. Downstairs unit is running outside, not circulating air inside (inside temp 87). Vents inside are cool to touch, no air. Outside unit fan is pulling, but air exhaust is cool. Compressor ? Should air be circulating even if compressor not functioning. Is there anything in attic exchange that would affect downstairs circulation. Thanks.

Assuming that the 2 systems are isolated, that there isn't any cross over between the systems...

It is normal for an air conditioner system, from window unit to central, to be able to circulate the air, even if not cooling. This is known as Circ or Fan Only Mode. But, in this mode, the outside unit (condenser) would not be turned on.

Since the condenser for downstairs has its fan blowing, the compressor, as you properly surmised, is not running. There would not be anything in the attic exchange that would affect this, since you are in cooling mode, and not using the furnace.

Some possible reasons for the compressor to not run are: Overload Protection is tripped (burned out), Compressor contactor (high current relay) is not engaging or contacts / coil are open, Wiring between downstairs Thermostat and condenser is damaged (in particular, the wire that activates the contactor). A failed compressor protection (time delay) device will also prevent it from starting / running.

Time to call a service tech.

the blower should be moving air you are not feelig any air for on reason the fan or blower is bad or the cap is and if that or they were bad the condensing unit would start to freeze up

Our upstairs Central AC unit will not cool below 80 degrees. Everything is blowing fine. It is 89 degrees outside today. The air coming in thru the ducts is 80 degrees. The downstairs unit blows 70...

you will need a thermometer, you can use a meat therm.take a temp reading of the air going into the return and then coming out of the supply at the unit, it should be at least 15 to 20 degrees cooler in the supply, if not it may be low on refrigerant also check filter and return duct make sure your not pulling air from attic

Amana RCE24C2A trips circuit breaker

tripping the circuit means the unit is has a ground, "means some peeled wire inside is touching its metal case"

Outdoor AC unit drains water excessively when heat is on

This may not work, because I had the same kind of problem with my dehumidifier. The coils needed to be cleaned off (there was a lot of gunk on the coils). I don't know if there is some sort of drainage hose, but that needed to be cleaned out too. A garden hose worked just fine. I now do this once a year or so, & the dehumidifier works great.

I have two outside ac one for floor and other for upstairs and i button on heater auto and ac outside fan is running is that normal or not? and live on this new house for two years and cant find someone...

No the fan out side is for a condensing unit and compressor. The compressor should not run with the heat. I am almost positive that if this is not a heat pump that the compressor unit should not be running.

Coil and fins start ice up

The fins are dirty. They need to be washed every year or two with an acid based cleaner. They MUST be rinsed completely.

Fan runs but blowing hot air. Thunderstorm reset some breakers. I did reset the two breakers inside the house and one unit working fine, upstairs unit fan running but blowing warm air only. Box out

Sounds like your Capacitor is bad, or you had a wire burn off compressor terminal or capacitor. Way you can check capacitor is take cover off and see if looks swollen. Make sure to turn off power before taking panel off.

Goodman air conditioner not running

2 summers ago, exact same problem with one of our two units outside. contractor that installed the unit when home was built was not helpful and not able to come out. another a/c company explained they would not be able to make it that day, but offered knowledge that often times in my area (San Antonio, TX) ants get into the electrical contacts of the mechanical switch and block the current.

following instructions to trip all the breakers inline and checking this it was confirmed, i cleaned the contacts with pencil erasers (a trick i learned with model car electric leads) and sure enough it's still working 2 years later.

believe it or not the same year my water well had the same symptoms and it turned out to be the mechanical switch was blocked by ants also!
