If your laptop is sparking when you plug the cord in, don't attempt to turn it on -- you could start a fire. You're better off giving up on the laptop, especially if you already have a new one.
However, if you need to get data off the old laptop, you can do so with a laptop hard drive adapter, as long as the hard drive hasn't been damaged. Laptop hard drive adapters aren't expensive, and you can get more information on them from this TechRepublic article:
