Question about Western Digital 500GB My Book World Edition 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

I have a WD 500G "My Book Essential Edition" drive that no longer shows up on my desktop. It is a 24" iMac running OSX 10.5.8. The drive has been fine but one day I noticed it was not on the desktop running Time Machine. I realized the power plug had been knocked out. Plugged it back in and the drive showed up on the desktop. Fine. Next day after previous days shutdown noticed it was not there again. It is plugged into a Belkin USB hub. Unplugged drive and Mac, switched port on hub but nothing. The blue light comes on in the drive but nothing on desktop. Where do I go from here. Barney

Oh i am sorry to hear that,

Well first try changing your USB cable to a shorter one, longer USB cables on My Book always do this errors,(personal experience, and locate to another port.
if that doesnt do the task the next steps would do the trick.(nut you may lose data from your MYbook
based on my experience, some mybooks after prolong usage and prolonged connection on the power supply or even the frequent disconnects without having it safely removes corrupt the hard disk, and thus not showing it on the PC.

You can verify if it is the case on you by, plugging you Mybook to a PC that runs on XP, if the Mybook doesnt get detected at all, or gets detected but not shows on the my computer lists, it is 100% corrupt, the only way to make this usable(but the data is now lost,But you can try to recover it using third party recovery apps) ;

this steps should be done only on an XP running machine

1::: right click My Computer, select Manage
2::: Select disk mangement and wait for the logical disk management to load
3::: look for the my book in that window(it may not show as my book but shows as an UNKNOWN PARTITION or UNKNOWN DEVICE)
4::: Under the volumes tab you will see
then the cd drive
and last would be the unknown partition, which is your my book.

the next step would be to repartition it
(proceeding erases the data) anyway it is already corrupt.

highlight the unknown partition or drive>right click> select create partition(if there is no create partition selection, look for format or intialie partition then proceed to format)
and your done recovering your drive,
you may want to use data recovery software. Just google it, there are free soft for data recovery.

Western Digital drive disappears

i heard that it must be installed under SATA 3 or 4 and only the c drive or system drives are to be under SATA 1 and 2. You change this in the BIOS i think.

My Computer lists my new MY BOOK as two drives.

It sounds like you have the My Book Mirror edition. If that is the drive that you wanted it is suppose to do the mirroring. Otherwise, I'd contact WD and explain that they sent you the wrong drive.

Good Luck

Western Digital 500G Book drive

Hi stuhubbard. "joul" posted this fix in response to my WD issues. Check it out....

I had the same problem today and I solved it...
Go to the Western Digital official website, choose your model and download the driver for works magically with XP. Fast and easy :)

My WD fixed itself, but this seems like a likely fix if you are still having problems. Perhaps let "joul" know if this is useful for you.

check cables to drive, reboot computer a few times to see if it shows drive , last thing you could do is reformat drive, you may have lost the format.

My Book firewire not bootable on mac

I picked up a couple of My Books lately( via Ebay), and noticed that i can not get them to work on the Firewire interface with my Dual Core Intel Mac. Shows up on USB2.0 fine however.I found an online reference that said Apple changed some things on the Firewire interface year or two ago, and that vendors had to update their firmware (it related to Firewire devices reporting a unique ID to the Mac).

Cannot retrieve data from my 500G WD

For your 2 queries:
1. The clicking sound is indicative of a hardware failure or the start of one. Considering having it fixed would simply be buying a bit of time and prolonging the inevitable.  The drive even when repaired tends to be suspect and would defeat its very purpose;

2. You can perform the reformat yourself. If the WD would show as a removable drive in your Windows Explorer, right clicking on the assigned drive letter would give you the option to Format it.

Alternately, it might be to your advantage to simply replace the WD. In some instances, it is also possible to just replace the actual HD inside the enclosure.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
