They are only in the lens, indicated by an IS in the lens name.

Lens mount fit

None directly. The T90 was the last Canon camera to use the older FD lenses. All newer Canon SLRs, film and digital, use the EF mount. However, by using an adapter such as http://www.rakuten.com/prod/adorama-canon-fd-lens-to-eos-body-adapter-with-correction-glass/216466533.html?listingId=120668308, you can use the old lenses on any Canon digital SLR.

Turn off the image stabilization (OS) feature of the lens. This is intended to combat camera shake when handholding the camera. It should not be used on a tripod or any other stable platform.

Focus hutning with Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 Image Stabilized

I had this problem too, then my camera started getting Error 99 (there is some problem) and not working.
If you look at this website and follow the steps under Update 2
http://www.richardsnotes.org/archives/2005/04/29/50mm-lens-contact-points/
I think you will fix your problem. The connections between lens and camera probably have a little dust in them, use a soft rubber eraser to clean them. Make sure no dust or pieces fall into the camera or lens when cleaning!

Image stabilizer stopped working on Canon 70-300mm lens

Taken that you made sure that the IS switch was on, on the lens, yes you have to find a camera repair shop to get it fixed.
The best shops are authorized Canon repair shops. You can call Canon support, and they should be able to give you advice on what shop to send the lens to.
I hope this helped!

L.How important is it that I update firmware 1.0.4 to 1.08 on my 40D slr? 2. Is there an adapter that will work with FD lenses and the 40D?

The firmware update (Version 1.0.8) incorporates the following improvements and fixes.
1.Fixes a phenomenon in which Image Stabilization operation emits a sound when certain buttons are pressed, with the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS lens attached to the camera.
2.Fixes a phenomenon in which the Image Stabilization operation emits a sound from the lens when IS lenses are attached to the camera.
3.Fixes a phenomenon in which a part of the image looks unnatural when reviewed on the LCD.
4.Corrects errors in the Spanish and Norwegian menu screens.

So if your camera is working properly for your purposes, and you don't use any IS lenses, you don't really need to update the firmware.

In answer to your second question, I don't think so. All EOS cameras communicate with the lenses completely electronically, and so work with any EF or EF-S lens. You may be able to find an adapter which would physically match an FD lens with an EOS camera, but all settings would have to be done manually on both the camera and the lens, and it would definitely be trial and error. The metering function in the camera depends on receiving a lot of information from the lens to get the correct exposure.

Canon Lens troubleshoot

A slight humming, and click when it is turned on or off is normal.

Try taking the lens off the camera, and use a blower to blow the back of the lens, and same for the front. If the lint is actually inside the camera, between two pieces of glass, it needs to be serviced by Canon.
Make sure to check and see if you have a filter on the front that can be removed, it might be in there.
