My ION Tape2PC cassette player sounds distorted on either side. It worked fine the last time I used it. The 3 tapes that I tried sounded great in other players. Is ther anything I can do? Donna

Yes, I was just disappointed because the machine isn't that old and now I have to find something else. I was hoping it was a problem I could solve on my own. I just hated paying $20.00 to find out that it still wasn't going to work! There is nothing else to do but buy another one I guess.

Welcome to analog sound. It hardly matters what you have upstream, the slowest link in the chain will determine the fastest speed. A cassette deck's high-end frequency response is dismal at normal speed. It only loses MORE high frequencies if you increase it, say, to dub cassettes. Playing out to the usb is at normal speed. Block out some time. That's the way it is.

When converting tape to itunes on my MAC, sound is coming out from right channel only. How do I get sound both the left and right channels?

It's most likely a faulty connection, be it plug or wire between one of the machines, or the channel has been switched off somehow.

I don't own and am not familiar with this device but my advice would be to turn all progs off. As long as you are not on the internet and you have no media connected then turning the anti virus off is safe as your computer is in a stable condition. I would also try using a different usb slot if you have that option as the distorted sound you are describing may be coming from interference with your usb port or cable. Good luck and I hope you manage to record those tapes!

Tape2PC USB "not recognized"

I had the same problem a few days ago (April 5 2009). The problem turned out to be a dodgy USB socket on the back of the Tape2PC. There was a bent & broken pin in the USB socket.

Perhaps you have a similar problem with the USB port - have a close look at it in good light.

I took the the cover off the tape2pc (6 screws), and then removed the small circuit board containing the USB socket (2 screws). The part number on this board is 0038-2410-0000. This small board is connected to the main circuit board on the base of the box by a short cable. You just unplug this cable from the USB port board, cut a cable tie, and replace the USB port board. It is a very simple and quick job - it took no more than 10 minutes and only requires a small Philipps head (+) screw driver.

I don't know where you live, but I phoned the UK distributor for Ion and received a replacement board within 2 days.

The PC now recognizes the tape2pc again but I can't get any volume when I try to record my cassettes. Any suggestions with this?

Audio tape cassettes, old pre-recorded and home recorded play too slowly and drag. All brands. Tape deck plays new tapes fine.

A good cleaning to the rollers and tape head with a qtip and a small amount of rubbing alcohol should do the trick

Static in the middle of a recording.

I had the same problem, but the reason for it seemed to be that the USB cable from the cassette deck wasn't plugged directly into my computer, but via a hub. When I plugged the cable directly into my computer (PC, using Windows XP), the problem disappeared, or seems to have disappeared so far.
