Question about Blackburn 4.0 Bike Computer

1 Answer

Blackburn atom 4.0 does not read speed

I installed the computer and transmitter, magnet is in range of transmitter, but when the wheel spins, no results. Am I doing something wrong? I set all the data that needed to be set etc. I followed manual all the way through.

The magnet has to interrupt the pickup and the transmitter communicates it to the computer, so settings are irrelevant for basic function.

Take the computer off its mount and hold it closer to the transmitter to see if that helps. Then take the magnet off the wheel and wave it by the pcikup to see if that helps.

If neither works, consider that weak batteries in either unit can cause it to fail. Some units also have a minimum and maximum distance within which they'll work.

I have misplaced my manual for my Blackburn sl 3.0. I am looking for the wheel size chart

Try searching for a cateye manual online - wheel sizes don't depend on which computer you have! Alternatively, use a measuring tape to measure a roll-out using the tyre valve to measure exactly one revolution.

Its probably because the computer has lost the ID nuber. It happens every time when U change the batteries or re-setup the wheel size.
It happend with me and it took a long time to figure it out.
So try theese steps out:
1: check the ID number: (hold the right (mode) button for 5 seconds till "ID" is written on the screen) - if there is no number shown thats a good sign.
2. press the reset button on the remote (before make sure that the magnet is placed close enough and it is passes right true in the center of the battery cap of the remot) so RIGHT MAGNET POSITIONING IS ESENTIAL
3. after pressing RESET spin the wheel aproximatly for one minute.

If that is the problem it should pick up the sign.

Ps. A stronger magnet might also help.

Good luck.

I had this problem as well. What I found was that the transmitter path from the magnetic sensor to the computer is very narrow, a 15 degree cone. Reposition your computer to fall within this cone. It should pick up the signal.

Unit is measuring cadence and heart rate, but is not measuring speed, distance or ride time.

Check to make sure your speed/ distance sensor is in alignment with your wheel magnet. If it is then check the battery in the sensor.

Speed and distance are on a different sensor than the cadence.

What number do I put in for wheel size 700x23 on a blackburn atom 4 cycle computer

You don't want to guess. Every tire varies from the nominal size to some extent. Measure one wheel revolution on the ground in millimeters and use that number. With 4-digit accuracy it seems silly to ballpark the measurement.

sounds like, the magnet on the wheel and the sensor are missing each other, try adjusting the way it passes each as you rotate your wheel. Also, you may have to reprogram after new batteries.

Sounds like a weak magnet in one of your wheel speed sensors. There is a toothed gear that runs infront of the magnet, the magnet senses the highs and lowes in the toothed gear and calculates your vehicles speed by doing so. the abs and traction control use these individule readings from all 4 tires to deturmine if one wheel is locking up or spinning and acts accordingly. If one of the sensors isn't working proberly the computer will get the wrong signal and not function properly. You need hook the car up to a scan tool that can tell you what all 4 speed sensors are doing and drive the car. Watch for the sensor that falls out of range of the others, replace this sensor.

Hope this helps.
