I have had this tv since I was young, got it back in the 90s so its really old. Anyway the tv has been dying slowly for the past 2 years. It started with just one line across the top of the tv aout 1 inch wide, just a solid black line. Now it has expanded slowly all the way to about 3 inches wide. I noticed the other day that if I try a vhs and the crackly screen comes on that the lines no longer are there and you can see the entire screen, but as soon as the movie comes on the line (3 inches wide) comes back. SO what could this be.

Re: black line problems
Some components in the vertical deflection amp have been going out of spec with age.
The set may no longer be worth to spend money to service it because of its age. However, if you wanted to invest the money, the set is serviceable. Considering its age, the CRT may be soft, and there are many other older components that can soon fail.

this will only help until the next time it is out of alignment but if you slap the side of your tv about where the line is it should straighten out but there is no telling how long it will stay straight......My sons tv was doing that and i had a tv when i was young that did it that is what my mom told me to do and what i told my son to do and it works.... the problem is an alignment or conection problem from dust most likely.
U can't.Only horizontal lines on the top parts of the tv screen or the lower parts of the picture screen.Or very light horizontal lines mix in with the tv screen pictures. The "CRT" the picture tube is slowly dying of old age.Quicker than they supose to.The late 90" these problems case show up alot more in standard tvs using CRT tube.Because the CRT and analog design about to be faze out of the market place. The glass molding and those radiation matrials, they used to make those "CRT" picture tube materials, not as good as before.
it is due to loose contact near
1 anrena or cable socket.
2 cable wire loose.
3 loose contact near tuner.
4 tuner b+ line or agc line loose.
5 horihontal hold tunning is not proper.or control loose.
hope this will help.
Sounds like you have a power supply filtering problem. Perhaps a filter capacitor is going bad. If your set has a switching power supply
oscillations from it are getting into the video.
You need to have a tech to check it out for you. You should get an estimate first before having it repaired.
Your problem sounds like the stk type regulator.. Itsnot a really expensive part BUT on a set this old yes you can repair it but also your gonna be repairing it more and more as the capacitors are drying up and the circuit is getting brittle. I wouldnt invest anything in this set. time to make a boat anchor out of it!
