There are many reasons for this problem. Here are a few common reasons. You may need a tech to determine exactly which part is at fault.

Defrost Problem
Modern refrigerators are designed to self defrost and it is essential to the airflow to have an evaporator coil that is clear for air movement. If the rear interior panel of the freezer has frost appearing, it is most likely a defrost problem and must be corrected before temperatures can be restored to normal.

Dirty condenser Coil
Check the condenser coils for lint and restrictions. It is located underneath the refrigerator and accessible from the rear. A dirty condenser coil will result in poor cooling, especially in the freezer.

Faulty Condenser Fan Motor
The condenser fan motor is found under the refrigerator near the compressor. This motor is essential to proper cooling. If the fan motor is not running, there will not be proper heat removal from the condenser and the result will be higher than normal temperatures in the freezer and usually in the fresh food section. Ensure the fan motor is running when the compressor is on.

Low Refrigerant Charge
If the unit has a low refrigerant change, the freezer will not reach proper temperatures.

    There are many separate
components in a refrigerator's defrost system that must work in consort
for a frost free system to work properly. We will attempt to explain the
    workings using simplified electrical schematics.

    The heart of the
defrost system is the defrost timer. The timer is a motorized device
that opens and closes electrical contacts. Each contact can be thought
as a light switch, one controls the defrost cycle, the other the cooling
system. When one of these is switched on, the other is switched off. A
motor on the timer (NOT illustrated) turns a cam that opens and closes
these contacts at set intervals (see below for other types).

    The defrost timer eventually
switches into defrost mode and supplies power to the defrost heater(s)
to melt any frost that has accumulated on the evaporator (cooling) coil.

    The cold control
contacts remain closed but since the defrost timer is no longer feeding
power to that circuit, the compressor does not run.

    Once the defrost termination
thermostat (a.k.a. defrost limit switch) senses a set temperature, it
opens the circuit to the defrost heaters, shutting them off. The timer
remains in the defrost cycle until the timer advances back to the
cooling mode. Since the limit switch is open, the heaters are no longer
on for the rest of the cycle.

Keep in mind that, normally the interior
evaporator and exterior (if present) condenser fan motors should run
whenever the compressor is running and vise versa. If the timer is
stopping operation of the cooling system, neither the fans nor
compressor should usually be running at that time. Its possible that you have the problem there.

2 year old Kenmore side by side refrigerator is too warm

the freezer feeds the refridgerator with cold air, when you open the freezer door,do you hear the fan blowing,if not you need to change the evap fan motor, next take out the second from bottom food bin and touch back wall,if you feel snow or ice you have a defrost problem, you'll have to take off back wall, advance the timer till it clicks into defrost and see if the heater comes on,if so you have a bad timer,if not read out the t-stat and the heater,if there are plug in wires on t-stat unplug them and bypass the t-stat by plugging t-stat wire to heater if heater comes on change t-stat,leave the heater on to help you defrost the ice off of evap coil and use hair dryer to melt ice, hope that helps

Refrigerator and freezer not cooling/freeding

Possibly a defrost circuit problem -

1) Bad defrost thermostat
2) Bad defrost heater
3) Bad defrost timer
4) Failed evaporator fan motor.

Look for frost accumulated inside the louvers at the back panel, top and bottom. If you see it, remove food from freezer and put in ice chest. Take out shelves, get hair dryer and warm the backside of the freezer, directing air down the louvers. Then leave to sit for 4-6 hours with the freezer door open. Put towels in the bottom of the freezer to catch any melted ice.
After period of time, plug unit back in and power the unit back up. Once you know it's cooling, empty ice chests back into freezer.

If there is a problem in any of the above components, then it will show up in 3-4 weeks witht he same problem again.

Not cooling, ice on evap. coil

After ten years, the defrost coil may be bad. That will allow the evaporator to ice up. Find the defrost timer, check it out first. Some have a manual control.
