How to wipe clean CF-19 hard drive

If the Panasonic Toughbook CF19 has a Hard Disk Drive,
then you should be trying to wipe it by booting from an
external USB Optical (cdrom) drive.
You have to enter the BIOS by pressing the F2 function key,
and set USB CDROM as the first bootable device.
Then save and exit the bios.
The external optical (cdrom) will now boot
with the proper bootable media.
If you have a HIREN bootable CD then one of the
tools will allow you to WIPE and RE-FORMAT the
internal hard disk drive.
Good Luck.

How to Completely Erase a Hard Disk Drive

Erasing a hard drive is a step that most computer users overlook. Just simply going through your data and using the delete key in Windows does not entirely delete the data. This just simply removes the shortcuts making it not visible to the user. If a person wanted, they can easily use software to obtain the data off the hard drive.

Fun Fact
A study was done and were 158 used disk drives were collected and the data retrieved. The two students found 5,000 credit card numbers, medical reports, detailed personal and corporate financial information, and several gigabytes worth of personal e-mail and pornography on those drives.

Disk Wiping Methods

There are two common methods for erasing data. These are formatting and wiping. Formatting a hard drive will not erase the data on the disk but will delete the address tables making it more difficult for average users to see the data, however, a computer specialist who is skilled can obtain some or all of the data using tools. Disk wiping is a more effective method and basically write over the data with 1's or 0's. The more times the disk is overwritten the more secure it is.

Disk Wiping Software
There are numerous free software utilities out there that will wipe your hard drive. I will recommend two programs and briefly go over them.

Eraser - Click here for download

Eraser is a advanced security tool for Windows that will completely remove data from your hard drive. It has a simple to use interface and uses multiple wiping methods such as Peter Gutmann's paper Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory.

You can use this program to delete files, folders, recycle bin contents and even free space on a drive. Click here for a quick start guide which will give you the basics.

-You can even use Eraser to wipe your flash drive.

Darik's Boot and Nuke - Click here for download

Darik's Boot and Nuke is basically software you boot your computer into. You can load the software into a floppy disk, CD, or USB stick if supported by your computer. Once you boot into the program, you select the wiping options and it will do the work. This is an effective program and I have used it before.

In order to boot your computer to the software you will first need to load the software on the media(usb/cd/floppy) described above then insert the media into your computer. Turn off your computer and as it is booting up you want to go into your computer BIOS. Usually, it will tell you what to press to get into BIOS during the boot up process. Once inside the BIOS you will need to change your boot order so it boots to the media device first. Once done, exit the BIOS saving your changes and the computer will boot into the media and start the data wipe software.

Tips

-If you are installing a new operating system I recommend you first wipe the hard drive using the methods described above, then formatting the drive for the new operating system. If you are giving away the hard drive or computer, I would recommend you wipe the hard drive before doing so.

Reformate the harddrive wipe clean

Formatting will not wipe the hard disk clean completely. If you do not intend to install Windows back on the hard disk then use this program -

I have a Emachine T5212 and im trying to reformat my hard drive but my internal dvd drive is not recognized.I brought an external dvd drive, but everytime i try to erase my hard drive it tries to load from...

First you need to have media ready to install once format is compelte.

You can not format a drive you are currently using an operating system unless you run the operating system setup disc in which case you would be booting and running from cd once you start reloading you main drive.

So if you are loading windows .
Review steps below if when you boot you do not have option to select boot device

Boot you laptop / pc and get into the BIOS
<normally f2 or f8 , f12 depending on system.>

Change the BOOT order to cdrom as primary \ you may see the device as USB CD/DVD rom with the actual name of brand there.

Save and exit

Have operating system in cd/dvd rom attached to device

Once it starts to load you will see BRIEFLY in the upper left corner PRESS ANY KEY TO LOAD FROM CD ROM or something similar... stop reading this and press a key ........

From there it should prompt you for setting up a new os, I prefer linux myself but in windows or linux in the setup process you have the option of just loading the operating systems or DELETING THE PARTITIONS and FORMATTING the drive, therefore wiping i .

NOTE: THIS IS NOT WIPING YOUR DATA, if you are trying to hide something, wipe from your drive past **** you never wanna share with anyone again..... repost under how do i wipe my hard drive clean .. its a completely different story .. not hard but different.

When i try the acer system recovery it keeps coming up with an error that says windows could not install and setup with resume when computer restarts..restarts ands same box pops up? cannot get past that...

Have you tried booting to the system recovery again and starting it over? Otherwise you may need to wipe it clean and start from scratch. Download a program like Darik's boot an dnuke to wipe the hard drive clean (this will destroy all data on the hard drive, including system recovery data if that is saved on the hard drive instead of CD's.) Then try the system recovery again (if it's on CD's)

System is running extremely slow, when I tried to do a factory restore I get an error code 0xf00000005. I ran hardware diagnostics on the hard drive memory cpu and mobo, tests run extremely slow. I tried...

After using Darik's boot and nuke (DBAN) your hard drive will be wiped clean with little chance of recovery. This also depends on how many passes you used for the disk wipe. More passes = less chance of recovery.

Restore from backup
You can restore backups previously created (as stated in the Create backup
section) from hard disk, CD or DVD.
1 Boot to Windows XP.
2 Press <Alt> + <F10> to open the Acer eRecovery Management utility.
3 Enter the password to proceed. The default password is six zeros.
4 In the Acer eRecovery Management window, select Recovery actions and
click Next.
5 Select the desired restore action and follow the onscreen instructions to
complete the restore process.

Wiping WD hard drive

I suggest that you use Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN")application to completely Esare the Hard Drive. It is a freeware application.

Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot disk that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction.

Want to totally clean hard drive to sell computer

All hard drive manufacturers have utilities you can download from their web sites that will write all zeros to your hard drive from a bootup environment.

Then if you get a hold of a copy of Hiren's Boot CD, you boot to this from your CD/DVD drive and select Hard Drive utilites and there is a program called wipe disk.

A free program called GDISK, will wipe a drive according to DOD standards. It doesn't com with a boot loader you can use to boot from your CD/DVD drive, you need to use Nero Express to create a bootup disc using the built in boot image from Nero, add GDISK to it and then once you've booted up, you type the command
gdisk /?
And you will subsequently see command line codes to do a disk wipe. Through trial and error you'll get this right unless you are already comfortable with command line structure.

Hiren's is the best tool and invaluable to have around.
You can find the home page for it here.
