Most single phase motors have an overload protection device, either over current operated or temperature operated, either way once it cools the motor can be restarted, but you need to find the problem.
1. Bearings, if it runs noisily and possibly vibrates it might need a new set of bearings.
2. If it sounds like it has bit of an electrical hum or sounds labored may there is a pump problem overloading the motor and therefore drawing too much current and overheating.
3. Depending on the internal start and run circuit the start capacitor may have died or the centrifugal switch that switches between the start and run windings once it gets some RPM going may be malfunctioning.
4. It could just have a stator winding problem and need rewinding.
Unfortunately the last 3 options need some electrical test instruments and will need to open the motor up to see what design it is. Your best bet is to take it to your local rewind shop and get them to check it for you.
A rewind may be just as expensive as a new motor these days $300 to $400

it could be a dirty start switch or could be the start or run capacitor is WEEK OR BAD , look for your local pool pump repair guy with free testing. WARNING capacitors hold electricity and can give a nasty shock.. testing is quick. I recommend it. ask them if they can test it right away, if not thank them and go elsewhere. if you own a pool, a good electric motor repair shop can save you thousands of dollars over the years.TRUE !
a rebuild on your motor should cost around 75$ and when you goto pick up your motor ask them how can i take better care of my pump and motor ?

    Thanks.. Jay

Noticed today the pool pump motor wasnot running, motor felt hot,

the most probable fault will be a failed start/run capacitor

next probable fault is something stuck in the impeller preventing it from turning or a rusted bearing at the pump end of the motor

Motor clicks off after getting hot?

This is a normal function of any pump. When a motor gets too hot it has a thermal cut-off inside so it won't burn up the pump.
Once the motor has cooled down it will come back on.
Look around the motor to make sure it has plenty of ventilation. If it does and the motor keeps shutting down on you I would replace it or take it to a motor repair shop and get it looked at.
There will be something wrong with the motor and that point.

Intex pool pump runs for five minutes and then shuts down and service light comes on. What could be the problem as it was running fine the day before?

We don't have a service light on our pump, but usually when our is playing up it's because the pump is struggling to push enough water through - for example if the filter needs changing or if the skimmer isn't receiving enough water/water level is too low.

Why is new ao smith pump getting hot

Most motors are warm to hot when running.
Is it getting so hot that the thermal overload is turning it off? If so the pump should restart once it cools down.
If this is a new motor on an old pump (replacement) it is likely to be:
1.) Incorrect or loose wire connections.
2.) Low voltage supply (frequently caused by undersized wire).
3.) Lack of fresh air supply to motor due to clogged vents.
4.) Incorrect amperage of replacement motor.

I have a 56 frame mustang pool motor. After running a while it shuts off and after 5 to 10 minutes turns back on. I dont think the timer is the problem because the switch on the time is on when the motor...

I suspect the cooling fan has separated from the shaft or the vent holes are plugged. There is an internal thermal switch that opens when the motor gets too hot, then closes when it cools off, and the motor starts again. When the motor is running hold your hand under the vent holes on the bottom of the motor and you should feel a pretty good breeze, usually hot air coming out of the motor.

A.O. Smith c48k2pa105c5 pool pump motor was running fine for 3 weeks. The other day it shut off cause of the thermal switch. Well now when I turn it on it works fien for a couple minutes then it shuts off...

If you mean that this motor is only 3 weeks old, and this is happening, return the motor.

If its an old motor and this is happening, purchase a new one. Even if you had a technician come out to look at the motor, chances are it would cost more than the motor itself.

Largest causes of thermal overload are.

-incorrect wiring
-wiring to wrong voltage
-incorrect wiring size
-bad motor windings
-bad rear end bearings.

I have a Powerflo Matrix sp 1593 Pool Pump. It has quit working altogether. There is Power and new plugs but will not turn on. is there a reset switch on this unit???

Thank you for posting your question here on

Not a manual one. If it overheats it will shut down to cool but once it cools enough it will turn back on. Is the unit still hot? If not you'll need to inspect the motor for damage. It may be a small part such as the capacitor or the starting switch, but could also be more severe such as the winding itself. You will also want to examine the shaft where it passes thru the pump and motor and look for signs of rust from a pump seal leak.

If you are not familiar with testing these parts your best bet would be a local electric motor repair shop to see if the motor can be repaired or if it would need to be replaced. They should also be able to ensure there is no pump damage.
