Hi wootwhoo, here is the link for your Compaq Presario 7940 Desktop 201479-001.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=94550&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=4&submit.x=5&lang=en&cc=us

Everything you need is listed within this link. It's a matter of looking. Since you need help setting up your bios settings. Than the link below will help you through it. I did not find a download for the manual. (Which is what I'm used to using for guidence for setting up bios's).
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph07110&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=94550&lang=en

Now this page/link will walk you through setting up the bios.
All you need to do is scroll down the page. Compaq has pictures to help. Without the board & all it's connected parts I can't walk you through this but I can help some.
If you get stuck you can post back here & I'll try to help you out.
Compaq is unknowing which key to press to enter your bios.
This is how it works. Just after powering on the PC start pressing the F10 key every 2 seconds. The main menu of the bios will open. If, F10 does not open you to the bios we'll have to try some other F keys. (You can only try one F ke at a time).
Try the F2 key next & than the F1 key & the F12 key. One of thses will open the main menue.
It should help you to know most of the settings will already be set to their defaults. (Like most boards are). If your not sure you can set default settings at the main menu. Save & exit. The PC will auto restart. Go back into the bios by pressing the correct F key. Normal items to set are (Time & Date) at the main menu.
You should see your cdrom listed & hard drive listed. Things you want to turn on. Audio should be set to Enable or on if you do not have a seperate sound card. Same for video. Memory & CPU settings (No settings). They usually are already set. Boot will need to be set. Normal is. Floppy Disk is first, 2 is CDROM & 3 is hard drive.
First time through a bios will be a wee bit tough. So read twice & set once. Follow Compaq's instructions.
When in doupt, ask.
Luck!

Mike

I have a desktop with an amer megatrend bios.I want to get a new bios that works with win 8.1 and needs to have support for PAE,NX.and SSE2

It's best to simply replace the entire Mother Board than try to replace the BIOS. Replacing a Mother Board vs replacing a BIOS is way easier.

Your current BIOS MIGHT work if you can find a flash file for it, but you have to be careful. If the BIOS your flashing isn't in production it's usually only PATCH flash file, to fix a problem with a BIOS, not upgrade it. And if you use the wrong flash file, it will TRASH your BIOS!

The BIOS, which is a chip, is usually micro-soldered to the Mother Board with high precision, by a robotic arm, and not easily removed or duplicated. The exception is if you happen to have a BIOS chip, that can be replaced, in a socket, but this is unusual instead of common.

The best source for BIOS info such as you are looking for is the American Megatrends Website itself at: AMI American Megatrends Inc Aptio (compatible with Windows 8) however their website is for the Mother Board manufacturer so you can't buy the BIOS as a consumer, but through a reseller, AMI Office, Authorized Representatives, etc (AMI American Megatrends Inc How to Buy).

You can however, buy a replacement Mother Board with a BIOS already installed on it (that's the way you usually buy them - with the BIOS pre-installed on the Mother Board) that's PAE, NX, and SSE2 and whatever else you want compatible. A great website to find computer parts and kits, new, refurbished, out of box, etc is the Tiger Direct Website at: TigerDirect com Electronics Tablets Phones Office Supplies Video Games. Just search for BIOS to find your specs, then check the bottom for possible best Mother Board kits to replace the one you have now. Hope this helps. :-)

HP Compaq Presario V6030 usb ports don't work, is this something I can fix with drivers or can they be replaced.

First try these steps
1.Remove all the usb devices connected, then go to device manager and under Universal Serial Bus controlers uninstall all the usb root hub and then restart the computer
2. If it still doesnt work do a bios update from hp.com for your notebook and then restart and do a bios default too.
3. If these steps doesnt resolve the problem do a recovery and even after recovery the NBs usb ports doesnt work then mother board needs to be replaced as the usb ports are fixed in it.

Serial port dosent work

make sure serial port is enables in the bios config, the one you can enter just when you power up the computer and press... usually DEL, but also F1, F2,F10, etc, depending on the motherboard...

i cannot tell you where in the bios is that parameter, i don`t know what bios do you have... so spend a time in there and you will find it...
