we have a sharper image model number S1788
we need to clean behind the air vents/grills that are part of the fan
We need to know the best way to do this.
We believe there is a release at the bottom of the front air vent/grill to somehow release the covering over the front grill to allow access for cleaning. Advice

Hello,

If you use a tower fan to keep your room cool, over time you will likely notice a build up of dirt and debris in the air vents. This build up can block the air from being released and cause the fan to no longer cool effectively. Keep in mind that all air vents should be cleaned when you first notice dust accumulation. So follow the steps below on how to clean your tower fan:

  1. Turn off the tower fan. For safety reasons, you should also unplug the unit from the wall.
  2. Shake the can of compressed air. Attach the extended nozzle to the base of the compressed air can.
  3. Point the nozzle directly into the air vents of the tower fan. Engage the trigger of the compressed air to start blowing the dust and debris out of the vents. Clean the tower fan vents in a systematic fashion and make sure you clean all openings.
  4. Wipe off the surfaces of the tower fan with a damp towel moistened with only a small amount of water. Allow to dry.
  5. Plug the fan back in and use as normal. Repeat this process on a regular basis, approximately once a month, to keep the fan clean.
The above steps is the right way of cleaning your tower fan.

Good luck.

    Ok.Got your comment.
If you use a tower fan to keep your room cool, over time you will likely notice a build up of dirt and debris in the air vents. This build up can block the air from being released and cause the fan to no longer cool effectively. Keep in mind that all air vents should be cleaned when you first notice dust accumulation.

The basic cleaning procedure for tower fan is as follows:--
Turn off the tower fan. For safety reasons, you should also unplug the unit from the wall.
Shake the can of compressed air. Attach the extended nozzle to the base of the compressed air can.
Point the nozzle directly into the air vents of the tower fan. Engage the trigger of the compressed air to start blowing the dust and debris out of the vents. Clean the tower fan vents and make sure you clean all openings.
Wipe off the surfaces of the tower fan with a damp towel moistened with only a small amount of water. Allow to dry.

Plug the fan back in and use as normal.

If you want to remove the front grill and clean internally and more deeply then You can remove the front grille of tower fans by releasing the grille clips. The clips are at the side.On both sides. The clips are very delicate. On some models there are metallic clips. They are strong clips.
This will help. Thanks for keeping updated.

I recommend using canned air to blow it out from the front. If you have access to a compressor, this works even better. Farmerbear at FixYa.com

It emits a metallic burning odor.

The trouble began in 2003 when Consumer Reports magazine published a report claiming the expensive air cleaners don't clean air. The magazine later claimed its tests showed that Sharper Image's Ionic Breeze Quadra Silent Air Purifier and four other units also release potentially unhealthy levels of ozone.

Will not turn on

Try this link:

www.breezerepair.com

I've heard if the plates aren't working, it doesn't turn on.

Now for the disclaimer:

Sharper Image has recalled the units. Consumer Reports released a report on all ionizers and the quadra failed. Sharper Image tried to sue Consumer Reports over the findings but they couldn't prove that the unit cleaned the air. Sharper Image was ordered to pay all legal fees forcing the company into Chapter 11.

EPA data has proven that ionizers not only are ineffective at cleaning the air but they are harmful to use as well. EPA.gov has a report on it.

The Consumer Products Safety Commission is going to release a report on all ionizers. It's possible that they will no longer be for sale in the U.S. next year.

Sharper Image also recalled the ionizers for $35. Since there in bankruptcy now I don't think the program is no longer available.

Could be a blade replacement needed but Sharper Image recalled the product.  Since it was proven in court that it wasn't effectively cleaning the air by Consumer Reports as well as EPA data.  As a result of the legal action, Sharper Image filed for Chapter 11.
Here are a few links about it:

I have a table top silent air purifier, professional series with ozone guard from Sharper Image and the blue light started blinking. I cleaned it and put it back together and it strats blinking again...

Unfortunately Sharper Image has discontinued support on the product line.  There was a recall going on with the product but since the company is chapter 11 right now, I don't think it is being honored right now.
What happened was Consumer Reports ran a test on ionizers, Sharper Image received a bad score and filed a lawsuit.  They lost the suit and had to pay all legal bills causing Sharper Image to reorganize.

The EPA has reported that using ionizers in a house or business may be harmful to your health.  You can read an article about it on their website.

The Consumer Products Safety Commission is going to release a final report on all ionizers by the end of the year.  Their decision may discontinue all sales of any ionizers in the United States.  This industry should have been regulated years ago just by the EPA data alone and for some reason it has been ignored.

Cleaning tower fan

The best way that I found to clean things like this is to find someone who has an air compressor and blow out the unit. But do this outside! The dust is usually unbearable. This is easier than losing small parts and can't hurt it at all!
