Question about Health & Beauty

1 Answer

I have a sungift 200 mobility scooter with an intermittent power problem. I have removed the top cover of the steering column, and there is no immediately obvious fault i.e corroded or disconnected wires. Sometimes when I turn the steering column, the power will just cut out, and the power light goes off, then if I turn the steering agin, it may or maynot return the power. I am quite sure it is an electrical fault, but where do I start to look?

There is a short in the cord going from the controller to the speed controller check the wire down through the tiller where it passes through the under the scooter i would bet on the wires being frayed and grounding out when you turn , patch or replace the wire and put wire loom over it to keep it from happening again

My problem is with the tiller column of a 3 wheel mobility scooter it's very lose, it pulls to the right

if i remember correctly where the column goes into the floor area , base of scooter , you may have to turn the scooter up on end. there should be a large locking nut that can be tightened up not too tight other wise the steering won't work correctly.

You don't need to go to a Mobility scooter manufacturer to get a bearing. Take the bearing down too your local bearing shop. They will measure it or use the numbers on the bearing to find you an exact match and you will get the bearing for allot less money too.

I'm trying to take some of the sloppyness out of the steering column, but as I don't have a manual, I'm reluctant to start taking bits off!

Joan and John,

This is typically not a do-it-yourself repair. The reason is that there are many parts to the steering column including upper and lower bearings and races, steering linkages, a front console wiring harness, and many other small parts. These parts must be assembled in sequence and aligned properly otherwise the scooter will not steer straight and will have noise and sloppiness in the column. You could also damage the wiring harness that goes through this area.
With that being said there ARE some adjustments that can be made to the tiller and steering column to improve its performance.
The tiller angle adjustment knob should be as tight as you can make it by hand.
If you place a block of wood under the front of the scooter you can check for free play with the front wheels off the ground. The tiller should move left and right without binding or noise. The top cup of the bearing race has some lock nuts that you can use as adjusters. Loosen the lock nuts and turn the top race clockwise until the sloppiness is gone and there is some resistance. Re-tighten the lock nuts making sure the column is centered. You don't want to over tighten the bearing races. The tie rods and ball joints are not a DIY adjustment or replacement.
If you need replacement of the top and bottom bearings find a local scooter mechanic or bike shop to do it for you.
If you have serious steering problems do not drive the scooter until it is repaired.
Hope this helps

Heavy steering on my s/h sungift 200,ok when raised off ground.tyre pressures correct.could it be something to do with the fibre washers on the main steering column.i dont think it is very old.have checked...

Hi Dave. I have had a few scooters that have had this problem. Most of them had the bearings tightened up to tight. Either the bearings on the steering column, or the bearings in the left or right stub axles. Just loosen off very slightly will help. Make sure that there is not too much movement in the bearings after adjusting them. Also give all the linkages a bit of a lube.

I have an ActiveCare Medical Mobility Scooter - 4 Wheel Pilot Mobility Scooter (Model 2410), and do not know how to disassemble for transport in a 2004 Buick LaSabre. Is there an instruction manual...

Hi Rosemary. The best way is to remove the seat by releasing the lever to turn it slightly, then lifting it straight up and off.
Next take off the battery cover, disconnect the batteries and remove them from the scooter. This will make the machine much lighter and easier to lift or push up a ramp.
Next release the steering column and fold down towards the rear. Place a piece of packaging or similar under it, so that it doesn't rub on the body panels and scuff the paint.
Good luck. Neil.
