Replace the switch. A trick can be done here. Unplug it then spray the switch (Soaked) with warm distilled water with mild soap. then let it dry using a Hair Dryer. Then test!

SOURCE: Canon 9950F has lines vertically

Although the problem sounds like a defective CCD, which is not repairable, I would strongly suggest you take the unit back apart and clean it again.

Why?

Because one single speck of dust on the mirrors will cause a vertical line like the one you speak of.

Here is a trick I use to clean the optics on copiers:

1) Get a low lint rag or shop towel NOT a paper towel, tissue, etc
2) Get a bottle of Windex. The stuff with ammonia works better on optics.
3) Spray the Windex on a corner of the rag. Make sure it is very damp.
4) Clean the mirrors/optics horizontally from side-to-side, making sure to get the corners.
5) Use the dry portion of your rag to soak up any residue. Once again, go side to side, not up and down.
6) Shine a flashlight on the optics and make sure there is not a single smudge or speck of dust. If there is, go back to step 4.

Also make sure to clean both sides of the glass.

Good luck! If my answer helped you, please rate me and comment. If not, please follow up with me. Thanks!

What operating system do you have? Go to the Canon support site:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=SupportDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=235&modelid=8053#DownloadDetailAct
Use the drop down menu to pick your OS (Mac or Windows excluding Win7) Win7 may work with the Vista driver (I am not sure of this) or a native (in Win7) driver for a TWAIN compliant scanner may work. The above URL also includes links to the manual and quick start guide. Install the software, unlock the scanner (transport lock is near the hinge of the lid towards the right of center). Connect the power, USB and FAU cables to the scanner and plug in the power to the outlet and the USB to the computer. Turn on the scanner and see if you can scan.

If you do have Win7 and have to use the Win7 drivers, you will not be able to use the buttons on the scanner to start the scan. You will be able to scan using Windows Fax and Scan (New scan) or Paint (File > Import from camera or scanner).

I hope this helps.

How to scan a slide on flatbed scanner

This model Canon MX700 cannot scan slides.
A flat bed scanner that can scan slides and negatives has a light scource that shines through the slide and negative fand is detected by the scanner sensor.
I suggest you purchase a slide scanner, it will be cheaper that getting a new flat bed scanner with slide capability.

Is the lid for the canoscan 9950F detachable? I need to scan large drawings and keep the lid in serial with the scanner. Is this possible?

Yes, you can detach the lid very easily. Open the lid and when in vertical position, just pull upwards. The lid is held by two metal rods, which will come out when you pull up the lid.

Scanner Glass Smashed

More than likely yes, unless you like to mod things than perhaps you could replace it with plexi glass. Could not promise it wouldn't even work after that but would also take time and know how.

Hi My Canoscan 9950f flatbed scanner glass has been smashed........ Is that the end of the road for it?? Or can it be fixed?

I had the same problem, shipping the scanner from Olympia, WA, to Austin, TX, the main glass broke (the sheet of glass you see when you open the scanner lid when it is set to scan an opaque object like an 8x10). I ordered a replacement part from the Canon parts center in New Jersey (732-521-7230) and at the time she told me there were only two left in the country, so you might be able to get the last one.

To replace it you just need to lift off the scanner cover, remove one scree in the bottom of each of the two wells the cover posts fit into, and lift the dark plastic part on the back of the scanner up (I think there are a couple of plastic snaps on the back side but they are not easily broken. Just pull up uniformly on both sides. Then you can remove the broken glass and put the new sheet in (align the plastic guides on the new sheet just like the ones on the old one were aligned).

Unfortunately, my scanner still doesn't work -- so I may have to give up on it. It seems stuck on a fairly well known failure code (2,178,0) when I start to scan and Canon customer support says there are no authorized service centers for the 9950F (I wonder if all their scanners are not repairable?).

Canoscan 9950F won't scan, says scanner locked, but it isn't

I was surprised by the same problem this morning. First time I've had a problem with in years. Checked the lock... it was already unlocked. I solved the problem by unhooking the USB cable from the hub, restarting my Mac (seems to be the key), replugging the cable and restarting the scanner. Worked like a charm. Hope it works for you!
