Freecom external 160gb back up - laptop not recognising back-up drive. Light is on on the drive, but that's all. Help please.

  • catwoman0 Apr 18, 2008

    1. The laptop has USB 2.0

    2. It does not show up as unknown device in the device manager.

    3. There is no yellow exclamation point or question mark in device manager.

    4. The hard drive is not new, all my photos were stored on it and I was able to access them a few weeks ago and now it is as if they have disappeared.

There is power to the hard drive but it is not recognised by the laptop.

Does the laptop have USB 2.0?

Does it show as unknown device in the device manager?

In device manager is there a yellow exclamation point or question mark?

Is the hard drive new (RAW) or has it been formatted and have the backup software on it?

All things considered, I would use a different usb cable to attach the device to your laptop and try updating chip set drivers. The north bridge controls usb hub as well as video.

EverestHome is a software I use to ID the north and south bridge chip sets, the cpu, board, bios etc.

If the external is not detected on other machines then it could be a problem with the external drive chips or connectors.

No response at all from laptop regarding my toughdrive 160GB

Your files are safe on the HDD, the trick to retrieve.

You should have backup at the end of your sessions

If you have the setup disc, reinsert and run!

Freecom problem 60 gig porharddrive - wont recognise backup drive

Hi Walter,

Given you may have unplugged it hot, chances are good that you've buggered the file structure but most of your data should still be there for retrieval.

Are you up for some tricky steps and wagering a chance at causing a little more damage in the process to do it yourself for free or would you prefer I point you in the directions of a pro who can do it for you without causing any additional damage?

For option one just reply back here by adding a comment saying you want to try it, for option 2 just leave a comment saying you'd like a pro and what region(Country & State/Prov) you are in and I'll get you in good hands.

My 400gb freecom external hardrive won,t uncompress my files. i have recently reset my laptop back to factory settings. i dont know if this the cause of the prob but all i was ok b4. can you help please?

Hi,
Have you tried moving the files onto your laptop and uncompressing them there?

Did you have Winrar (or any other copressing software) installed on the laptop before you went back to factory settings? Are the compressed files on the external drive in the .zip or .rar (or another) file format?

Freecom 160GB Hard drive not recognised

Drives do fail Nick. Is it powering up [power supply problem?] Plug it in and go to Start/Control Panel/Admin tools/computer management/storage/ removable storage and disk management. See if the disc is recognised there. If it is not, and if the disk is spinning Try putting it into the deep freeze overnight. Plugging in next morning and if it fires up get as much off as possible before it goes down again.
